General manager Bruce Allen expects that quarterback Donovan McNabb will be signed to a contract extension at some point, but he told Comcast SportsNet "we really haven't started" those discussions yet.

"He is part of our future. He knows it. He's a mature player who knows he will be paid well," Allen said. "We'll have plenty of time to get something done with him. We see him as part of our future ... and he knows it."

The Redskins sent two draft picks to the Eagles this spring to acquire McNabb and Allen did not view that move as a stop-gap.

"We made a great investment in trading for him and we like the guy," he said. "We really like him as a leader on this team. We think he's going to be a great Redskin for years to come."

McNabb was training at his Arizona home the past week with several of the Redskins wide receivers and is entering the final year of his contract.
