The NFL Draft is over, and it's time for draft gurus and pundits to give the Redskins a grade.
Redskins general manager Bruce Allen issued a reminder in his post-draft press conference on Saturday evening.
Don't forget the Redskins' second- and third-round picks.
Remember, the Redskins acquired quarterback Donovan McNabb for their second-round pick in this year's draft. A year ago, they used their third-round pick on linebacker/defensive end Jeremy Jarmon in the NFL Supplemental Draft.
Add in Adam Carriker, a three-year veteran defensive end who was acquired in an exchange of fifth- and seventh-round picks with the St. Louis Rams.
In all, the Redskins added nine players through the draft.
Offensive tackle Trent Williams was the Redskins' top pick, at No. 4 overall in the first round last Thursday.
On Saturday, the Redskins added linebacker Perry Riley, tight end Dennis Morris, wide receiver Terrence Austin and offensive linemen Erik Cook and Selvish Capers.
"We feel we helped our football team," Allen said. "We saw some players that have some traits that we liked. We feel we have some openings where they could compete for a job. I'm excited for those young men."
The Redskins also subtracted a player during the draft.
And it was a fairly prominent player at that.
The team traded quarterback Jason Campbell to the Oakland Raiders for a 2012 fourth-round draft pick.
It seemed unlikely that Campbell would have a future with the Redskins once the team acquired McNabb on April 4.
Since then, Allen and head coach Mike Shanahan have worked with Campbell to find a suitable NFL location for him.
Oakland could offer Campbell a starting job in 2010.
"We were trying to find him the proper home in which he could compete for a starting job," Allen said. "The way the trade worked out, we had compensation that we felt comfortable with...We wanted to pursue what we felt was the right thing for Jason."
The Redskins now have four quarterbacks on the roster: McNabb, free agent pickup Rex Grossman and youngsters Colt Brennan and Richard Bartel.
Asked about Grossman as McNabb's backup, Allen replied: "We are comfortable with Rex. He is very familiar with the offense and he had a good mini-camp last week. He is working hard. We also feel good about some of the other quarterbacks we have.
"We're also looking to sign an undrafted free agent quarterback. And we're going to keep our ears open for a free agent. But right now we're proud of our stable of quarterbacks."
Allen echoed comments from Shanahan on Friday that the Redskins were not planning to trade Albert Haynesworth.
Allen said the team has not attempted to trade Haynesworth this offseason, despite rumors and reports to the contrary.
"We were not shopping him," Allen said. "I don't know why the rumor started. Believe me, Albert's agent has known that since the first week the league year started. We know where Albert stands and he knows where we stand. We look forward to him having a productive season."
Similar rumors and reports have emerged regarding linebacker Rocky McIntosh, who is an unsigned restricted free agent.
"You can't trade an unsigned player," Allen said. "And we had no talks and we have not offered [McIntosh] anywhere, in case that rumor is out there. Yeah, I expect him to be part of the team this year."
Apart from signing undrafted rookie free agents in the two days, the bulk of the Redskins' off-season work is done.
From now until training camp, there is likely to only be a few roster tweaks here and there.
Did the Redskins' off-season come together as expected?
"You can always draw up a plan for a game or for an offseason, but it's still a work in progress and we have a lot of work to do," Allen said. "Hopefully we can get a few of the undrafted free agents. And then we look forward to continuing the off-season program. Then we have the mini-camp to once again help our players get better."
