Redskins general manager Bruce Allen talked about the NFL Draft, the ongoing labor situation and the progress of the team before the 7th Annual Mickey Steele Celebrity Golf Tournament on Friday.

In the April 28-30 NFL Draft, the Redskins made a series of trades and wound up with a total of 12 rookies, including first-round pick Ryan Kerrigan at No. 16 overall.

"The key was getting a dozen players that we feel are going to add an energy to each position on our football team," said Allen. "We added some talented players who are going to be hungry to compete, not only for roster spots but also for playing time."

In addition to Kerrigan, the Redskins drafted two defensive linemen, three wide receivers, two running backs, two defensive backs, an offensive lineman and another outside linebacker.

"Our coaches are itching to get the rookies on the field and help them develop into the players we want them to be," Allen said. "Let them learn what Redskins football is, and as soon as we can do that, the better."

With free agency waiting to open pending the labor situation, the Redskins used the draft to fill out the roster. The team feels ready for whatever comes, whenever it comes.

"When free agency arrives, we have a game plan in place," Allen said. "We think we can add players to all positions to add to the competition."

Allen said the key is to get the players union and the owners back into negotiations.

Meantime, one of the position battles coming into next season could be at the quarterback position.

With Donovan McNabb's future in Washington uncertain, backup John Beck recently expressed confidence that he could start for the Redskins.

Rex Grossman is scheduled to be a free agent, but if he is re-signed he could reclaim the job. He started the last three games of the 2010 regular season for the Redskins.

"I think all professional athletes have to have that inner confidence – they need that." Allen said. "I think that's natural. You could talk to any backup quarterback in the league, and they're going to say their ready to start, [as well as] every starting quarterback."

Whoever's under center, Allen is trying to surround them with the best tools to succeed.

"It's really not just about that [quarterback[ position," Allen said. "We have to fill the whole roster to make sure whoever's playing quarterback for us has a fair chance to win."

Redskins coaches are staying busy amid the ongoing labor situation.

Allen said about head coach Mike Shanahan, "He has been able to focus his entire 14-hour workdays on the assistant coaches. They've been using this time wisely to improve our schemes, make sure we question each other, and it's been a very helpful period for them."

The tournament at Queenstown Harbor Golf Links included more than 300 golfers. Redskins alumni in attendance included Mark Rypien, Larry Brown, Ricky Sanders, Doc Walker, Pat Fischer and Neal Olkewicz.

All proceeds from the tournament benefited the cancer programs of the Rypien Foundation and the youth programs of the Washington Redskins Charitable Foundation.
