Former Redskins linebacker LaVar Arrington, still a popular figure in the Washington, D.C., region and among Redskins fans, was in a motorcycle accident on Monday afternoon.

According to NFL.com, Arrington sustained serious but not life-threatening injuries in the accident, which occurred on a highway ramp near the Capital Beltway in Prince Georges County, Md. He was transported to Prince George's Hospital Center.

Redskins head coach Joe Gibbs issued the following statement on Monday: "We learned this afternoon that LaVar was involved in an accident. We hope he makes a full and speedy recovery. Our thoughts and prayers are with LaVar and his family during this difficult time."

NFL.com reported that Arrington lost control of the motorcycle he was operating and hit a guard rail. He was wearing a helmet and alcohol was not a factor in the accident.

Arrington joined the Redskins as the second overall pick in the 2000 NFL Draft. He played six seasons for the Redskins and earned three consecutive Pro Bowl bids from 2001-03.

In March 2006, Arrington was released by the club. He signed with the New York Giants, but his season was cut short due to a ruptured Achilles injury.

Arrington, who turns 29 on June 20, was released by the Giants earlier this year. He is currently an unrestricted free agent.
