The Washington Redskins announced today that head football coach Charlie Pierce of Briar Woods High School in Ashburn, VA has been named Redskins High School Coach of the Week for the week of October 4, 2010. The Redskins High School Coach of the Week program is designed to recognize and reward excellence in high school football coaching.
Coach Pierce has been coaching football for 21 years, the last six as head coach at Briar Woods. During his career, he has been named the 2000 Group AA Division 4 and Associated Press Virginia State Coach of the Year, 2000 Region II Division 4 Coach of the Year, 2000 Washington Post All Extra Coach of the Year and the 2001, 2002, 2007 and 2008 Dulles District- Division 3 Coach of the Year. The Falcons team recently snapped the 33 game winning streak of their division rival, two-time defending state champion Broad Run with a 20-13 win over the Spartans.
Athletic Director Jerry Carter says Pierce achieves these results by "being consistent and instilling a strong work ethic from his student-athletes and coaching staff. His biggest asset to motivation is his excitement and the enthusiasm that he brings to teaching and coaching every day. It is contagious not only to our students but to our community." The Falcons are currently 4-2 overall and 2-0 in their division.
Off the field, the same excitement and enthusiasm is demonstrated through the team's community efforts. This Thanksgiving, Pierce's student-athletes will assist with a food distribution at a local food bank for neighbors in need during the holiday season. The team is also actively involved in pre-school and elementary school reading programs.
Each week during the 2010 high school football season, the Redskins will select one area high school head coach as the Redskins High School Coach of the Week. The selection is based on the coach's continuing commitment towards promoting youth football, developing motivated student-athletes, his overall community involvement and overall team performance and record.
Each of the coaches chosen throughout the high school season will receive a $1,000 donation from the NFL Youth Football Fund to their football program and a framed certificate signed by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, Redskins Head Coach Mike Shanahan and Redskins General Manager Bruce Allen.
