One week into free agency, and Rock Cartwright had waited long enough.

On Friday, Cartwright agreed to terms on a contract to stay with the Redskins for a seventh season. He signed the deal on Saturday, making it official.

Cartwright, one of the more popular Redskins and a team leader, emerged as the Redskins' primary kick returner the last two seasons.

Last year, he moved into fourth place on the franchise's all-time kickoff return yardage list with 3,157 total yards.

Cartwright is also valuable on special teams, notching 34 tackles on punt and kick coverage units last season.

He hopes to see more playing time at running back--he has 647 rushing yards and six touchdowns in his six-year NFL career--but he has been third on the depth chart behind Clinton Portis and Ladell Betts.

Cartwright was drafted by the Redskins in the seventh round of the 2002 NFL Draft. He has been part of a close-knit running back group along-side Portis and Betts.

Cartwright visited Redskins Park on Thursday, but at the time he said his visit had nothing to do with the negotiations.

He did say that he hoped to remain a Redskin, perhaps even finish his career in Washington.

"I love the organization, I love the fans and I would love to be here," he said.

Now Cartwright is here, back for another season.
