Vinny Cerrato worked the phones after practice, talking with Bill Parcells of the Miami Dolphins.

The two front office executives ironed out a trade in quick fashion.

Just hours after the Redskins' defensive line suffered season-ending injuries to Phillip Daniels and Alex Buzbee, Cerrato had reached an agreement with Miami to trade for Jason Taylor.

In exchange for Taylor, the Redskins sent a second-round pick in 2009 and a sixth-round pick in 2010 to the Dolphins.

"We are fortunate that there was a player of his caliber available on the market, especially after one of our players got hurt," Cerrato said. "Normally there is nobody on the market of his caliber. [Taylor] is a six-time Pro Bowl player, and he was the NFL's Defensive Player of the Year in 2006. The timing was right [to acquire him]."

Taylor, 34, recently obtained celebrity status as a contestant on ABC's popular TV show "Dancing With the Stars."

In recent interviews, Taylor has indicated that he might play just one more season in the NFL to pursue a career in entertainment.

Asked about Taylor's comments, Cerrato said: "I am 100 percent confident that [Taylor] will play for more than one year."

On Taylor's transition to the Redskins, Cerrato said: "It is a totally new environment for him. He is excited for a new start."

Taylor has played his entire 13-year career with the Miami Dolphins.

"His play speaks for itself," Cerrato said. "It is easy to talk about Jason Taylor. His statistics back up everything that he has done. I think one of the more impressive accomplishments is that he played 90 percent of the plays on defense last year.

"We had to act after losing our starting defensive end Phillip Daniels."

Earlier, Cerrato expressed sadness over losing Daniels and Buzbee.

"Phillip worked so hard in the offseason to prepare," Cerrato said. "It is a travesty that he will not be able to play this year. Alex Buzbee is a young, local player who is a developing prospect. He was just backpedaling in a special teams drill when he got hurt."
