Players re-signing with Washington
TE Zach Ertz
Ertz proved that he can still be an important offensive weapon, and the Commanders rewarded him by reportedly keeping him in the DMV for another year with quarterback Jayden Daniels, **according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.**
Ertz was one of Daniels' most reliable targets in 2024, as he ranked second on the team in receptions, yards and receiving touchdowns. Ertz said he was the healthiest he had been in years, and he proved that by having his most productive season since 2021.
LB Bobby Wagner
Another one of Washington's leaders, both on and off the field, is choosing to remain with the Burgundy & Gold, as he agreed to and signed a one-year deal last week.
Wagner (6-0, 261) is a 14-year NFL veteran who entered the league with the Seattle Seahawks as a second-round pick (47th overall) in 2012. In his career, Wagner has appeared in 202 games with 201 starts and recorded 1,836 total tackles, 35.0 sacks, 99 tackles for loss, 13 interceptions, seven forced fumbles and 12 fumble recoveries. Wagner is a Super Bowl Champion (XLVIII), was an 11-time AP All-Pro (six-time first-team) and has been selected to ten Pro Bowls.
Last season, Wagner started in 17 regular season games and totaled a team-leading 132 tackles with 2.0 sacks, 10 tackles for loss, eight quarterback hits, four passes defensed and two fumble recoveries. With his 132 tackles, he recorded his 13th straight season with at least 100 tackles, joining LB London Fletcher as the only other player to record 100-plus tackles in at least 13-straight seasons in NFL history.
TE John Bates
Bates has reportedly agreed to remain with the Commanders, who drafted him in the fifth round of the 2021 draft, on a multi-year deal, **according to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo.** Bates is regarded as one of the best blocking tight ends in the league and helped clear paths for running back Brian Robinson as well as protect Daniels. Bates also has 61 catches on 88 receptions for 592 yards and two touchdowns in his career.
K Zane Gonzalez
The kicker that doinked the Commanders into their first playoff win in decades is staying with the team.
Gonzalez stepped in for an injured Austin Seibert in the second half of the 2024 season and hit five of his seven field goal attempts in the regular season and all 19 of his extra points. He was 7-of-8 in the postseason, including the 37-yard game-winner against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
P Tress Way
The Commanders' longest-tenured player is sticking with the team for at least another season, as the two sides have reportedly agreed to a one-year deal, **per NBC Washington's JP Finlay.**
Way, who was signed by the team in 2014, is the most successful punter in franchise history, as he ranks first in five major categories. Although he only punted 50 times -- the second-lowest single-season number of his career -- he surpasses Mike Bragg for the most total punt yardage in franchise history.
RB Chris Rodriguez Jr.
The Commanders have tendered exclusive rights free agent Chris Rodriguez Jr.
Rodriguez, a sixth-round pick from 2023, played in nine games and had 173 yards on 35 carries. Most of that came during the team's 42-19 win over the Tennessee Titans, when he rushed for 94 yards and scored a touchdown in the fourth quarter.
Commanders' trade moves
The Commanders have reportedly added wide receiver and offensive weapon Deebo Samuel, one of the league's most dynamic players of the last four years, to their roster via a trade with the San Francisco 49ers, **according to ESPN's John Keim and Nick Wagoner.** Although details of the trade have not been officially released by the team, the terms include the Commanders sending their 2025 fifth-round pick to the 49ers.
Samuel, a second-round pick by the Commanders in 2019, has 5,935 total yards and 42 touchdowns on 536 touches. Although his best season came in 2021, when he earned a Pro Bowl and First Team All-Pro selection for amassing 1,770 yards and 14 touchdowns, he has recorded at least 800 scrimmage yards in five of his six NFL seasons.
Players joining Washington
The Commanders have added to their defensive line by reportedly agreeing to terms with former Jets defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw, **per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.**
Kinlaw, who spent the first four seasons of his career with the San Francisco 49ers before signing with the Jets on a one-year deal, has played in 58 games with 45 starts and recorded 110 tackles in his career. The Jets made Kinlaw a full-time starter in 2024, and the former first-round pick put together a career campaign with 40 tackles and 4.5 sacks, both of which were career highs.
Check back for more reports on who will be joining the Commanders throughout the week. The NFL's legal tampering window opens on March 10 at noon and lasts until the new league year on March 12 at 4 p.m.
