Commanders rookies prepare for NFL debut

`

After getting a taste of the NFL in the preseason, the Washington Commanders' rookies will be getting their first real reps in the league against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The team hasn't had a quarterback with as much anticipation as Jayden Daniels since Robert Griffin III in 2012, who ironically was also a Heisman trophy winner and the No. 2 overall pick in his draft class.

Since Daniels was drafted in April, teammates and coaches alike have said nothing but positive things about him. Daniels proved he deserves the hype after an impressive showing in the preseason, which saw him finish with an 80% completion rate and 123 passing yards.

Despite all the buildup, Daniels hasn't let it affect the way he views his first regular-season NFL start. Daniels knows there are no second chances at an NFL debut, but he doesn't want to let the excitement of his big moment overshadow the job he has to do.

"I mean, it's kind of just go out there and just play football. Obviously, I'm [going to] embrace the moment, take it in," Daniels said during a press conference Wednesday afternoon. "I'm officially in my first NFL game, but once that ball is kicked out, none of that matters. So, gotta focus on trying to execute at a high level and go out there and try to help the team win."

Leading up to today, Daniels tried to keep his emotions even-keeled. Having been named a starter twice -- once his freshman year at Arizona State University and later as a transfer his junior year at LSU -- during his college career, Daniels understands the importance of staying in the moment and not letting his emotions change the way he plays.

"It is really the same," Daniels said. "Day by day, be where my feet are. Not really focused on Sunday. I got to get through Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and then it'll be game day."

Practicing alongside veterans such as quarterbacks Marcus Mariota and Jeff Driskel has also helped Daniels establish a strong support system that he feels has helped him be ready for Sunday night.

"I got a great foundation base playing, obviously it'll be tweaked week to week," Daniels said. "It's not going to be a final product. Later down the season, that's when everything would kind of be set in stone of the routine and stuff like that. Not just me, but the coaching staff. Everybody's new together, so we all still trying to get a feel for each other."

Even with the knowledge of what it takes to be a starting quarterback and having been there before twice in college doesn't mean Daniels won't still have nerves when he steps on the field Sunday.

"It's kind of like butterflies before every game, so nothing changes," Daniels said. "It's kind of just the same thing, go out there. Once that ball is kicked and I run on the field, take a deep breath, be where your feet are and go play football."

Rookie defensive back Mike Sainristil, on the other hand, isn't feeling those same butterflies ahead of his debut. He trusts in his preparation throughout practice to bring out his best on game days.

"No nerves. I feel like my preparation is going to let me go out there and play the best I can, so there's really nothing to be nervous about," Sainristil said following Wednesday's practice. "It's the same game I've been playing since I was a little kid, so just go out there, make sure I'm prepared, make sure I study the way I need to study going into this game, practice hard, practice with good effort, because the way I practice I'm going to play. Trust the details that they're giving us and just go out there and execute."

The Washington Commanders wrapped up their final practice before their season opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Like Sainristil, Daniels also feels that the team has put in a lot of work this season to be a contender in their Week 1 matchup against the Baker Mayfield-led Buccaneers. The extra preparation for the rookies with rookie minicamp and OTAs is an added buffer of preparation that makes Daniels believe the team is ready to go.

"Just the preparation we have from OTA's, or from my case and the other rookies, rookie minicamp to OTAs, to mandatory minicamp, to training camp," Daniels said. "Just the work that we put into preparation. We got a lot of hard workers. They prepare, they prepare real hard, like the vets and pros that they are. So, from there, I mean, I have a huge belief that we'll be ready to go.

"You just work so hard all offseason and it's finally time to go showcase what type of team you're going to be," Sainristil added.

Both Sainristil and Daniels have been key in transforming the on-field identity and intensity of the Commander, and there is no better time than Week 1 to debut what this new roster is all about.

"We get to send a message about what type of team we're going to be," Sainristil said. "Our slogan is, 'anybody, anywhere, anytime,' so for us that just means it doesn't matter who it is, because we know what type of group of men we have so we're going to go out there and battle with the guys each and every single day."

While nothing can ever be perfect and there will still be kinks to work out after Sunday, it's clear that the foundation has been laid for the rookies, Sainristil and Daniels included, to stand out in their NFL debuts.
