The Washington Commanders announced today that they have signed defensive end Deatrich Wise Jr. Full terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Wise (6-5, 280) is an eight-year NFL veteran who was drafted by the New England Patriots in the fourth round (131st overall) in the 2017 NFL Draft. He has played in 126 career games with 61 starts and totaled 314 tackles, 34.0 sacks, 90 quarterback hits, 33 tackles for loss, 12 passes defensed, five forced fumbles and one fumble recovery.
Wise has spent his entire career in New England and was name as the team's Walter Payton Man of the Year Award Nominee in 2024. He has also been named team captain for each of the last three seasons (2022-24).
Last season, Wise appeared in 15 games, making five starts and had 29 total tackles, 5.0 sacks and eight quarterback hits. In Week 10 against the Chicago Bears, he registered his second career game with two or more sacks.
In 2022, Wise registered career-highs in games started (16), sacks (7.5), total tackles (59) and tackles for loss (seven). In Week 3 against the Baltimore Ravens, he recorded his first career 3.0 sack game. All three sacks were in the first half making him the fifth player in Patriots history to accomplish that feat.
Wise played collegiately at the University of Arkansas for four seasons (2012-16). He played in 50 games with 10 starts and tallied 112 total tackles including 23 tackles for loss, 17 quarterback hurries, six passes defensed and four forced fumbles. At the time of his graduation, he finished 10th in Arkansas history with 16.5 sacks.
A native of Carrollton, TX, Wise attended Hebron High School. He is married to his wife, Channell, and the two welcomed their son, Amir, in 2023.
