Commanders sign veteran QB Josh Johnson

The Washington Commanders announced today that they have re-signed quarterback Josh Johnson. Full terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Johnson (6-3, 214) is a 10-year NFL veteran who entered the league with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as a fifth-round pick (160th overall) in the 2008 draft. In his career, Johnson has played in 45 games with nine starts and recorded thrown for 2,297 passing yards, 13 passing touchdowns and a 58.1 completion percentage. He has also rushed for 426 yards and one rushing touchdown.

Prior to joining Washington this offseason, Johnson had stints with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2009-2011), Cleveland Browns (2012), Cincinnati Bengals (2013), Indianapolis Colts (2015), Buffalo Bills (2015), New York Jets (2015, 2021), Baltimore Ravens (2016, 2021, 2024), New York Giants (2017), Houston Texans (2017), Oakland Raiders (2018), Washington (2018), Detroit Lions (2019), Denver Broncos (2021), San Francisco 49ers (2022). Johnson holds the record for most teams played for in an NFL career with 14.

Last season, Johnson appeared in six games in his second stint with the Ravens and completed two passes for 17 yards.

In 2022, he played in two games with San Francisco and completed one pass for 10 yards.

Johnson spent time with both Baltimore and New York in 2021 and saw action in four games with one start in Week 16 against Cincinnati. He threw for 638 yards, five touchdowns and had a 67.1 completion percentage.

In Johnson's first stretch with Washington in 2018, he started three games and posted 590 passing yards and five passing touchdowns along with 120 rushing yards and one rushing touchdown.

During the 2012 and 2013 seasons, Johnson served as a back-up in Cleveland and Cincinnati respectively. He played in three games and accumulated no statistics.

Johnson spent his first three seasons (2009-2011) in Tampa Bay and played in 26 games with five starts over that period. He threw for 1,042 yards and five touchdowns.

A native of Oakland, California, Johnson played collegiately at the University of San Diego. Over the course of his career, he totaled 724 completions, 9,699 passing yards and 113 touchdown passes. Johnson added 1,864 yards and 19 touchdowns on the ground.
