Tight end Chris Cooley could be out of action for another couple of weeks as he continues to rest a sore knee.

Cooley has missed several training camp practices in the last week due to the knee and he saw a specialist on Wednesday.

"We'll keep our fingers crossed that he'll be back," Shanahan said. "When will it be? I can't tell you for sure."

Cooley is entering his eighth NFL season. He has managed to stay relatively injury free in that span, except for 2009 when he suffered a fracture foot and missed the last nine games of the season.

Fred Davis has served as the starting tight end in Cooley's place. He caught one pass for 11 yards in the Redskins' 16-7 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers on Friday night.

Cooley is eager to return to action, Shanahan said, but athletic trainers remain cautious with him.

"He's a tough player, and he wants to get back quick," Shanahan said. "We have to give him a break, and hopefully he can get that knee responding well."
