It only took one play – the Redskins' first of the game – to break two records. It only took two quarters to break many more.
While the Redskins matchup with the Cowboys on Sunday at AT&T Stadium had no implications for the playoffs, quarterback Kirk Cousins and tight end Jordan Reed continued adding to their impressive season resumes by breaking more individual franchise records.
On the offense's first play of the game, Cousins fired a pass to Reed, who made the catch by the sideline and then turned up field to gain 11 yards.
With the reception, Reed passed Chris Cooley for most in a season by a tight end in team history (84), a record set during the 2008 season.
On that same play, and thanks to Reed fighting for a few extra yards, Cousins eclipsed 4,000 passing yards on the season, becoming just the third Redskins quarterback in team history (Jay Schroeder in 1986, Brad Johnson in 1999) to do so.
That specific drive culminated in a four-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Ryan Grant, making Cousins the first Redskins quarterback to throw a touchdown pass in all 16 games of a regular season since the adoption of the 16-game format in 1978.
Later, and early in the second quarter, with the Redskins ahead 21-0 thanks to three touchdown passes, Cousins lofted a pass to wide receiver Jamison Crowder down the sideline for 28 yards. With that, he accumulated more than 120 yards passing on the day, moving past Jay Schroeder (4,109 in 1986) for the most passing yards in a single season all-time (now set at 4,166).
The Redskins would settle for a field goal on their fourth drive, but not before Cousins attempted his 14th passing attempt of the day, breaking Schroeder's team record for attempts in a season (541 in 1986).
Cousins finished 12-of-15 passing for 176 yards and three touchdowns and a 155.1 passer rating, a fitting end to an incredible individual season that included 29 touchdowns, 11 interceptions, a 69.8 completion percentage and 101.6 passer rating.
