When rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III arrived at Redskins training camp, the training wheels and kids gloves were left at home.
Over the first five days of practice, defensive coaches have opened the playbook for the Redskins' starter and given him myriad pressures and looks.
"I think Coach is trying to get me the hardest looks possible so that I can be ready for those types of things," Griffin III said with a smile. "He is doing a great job of helping us offensively see many different things."
In addition to helping Griffin III prepare for the speed of the NFL game, the Redskins defense is also fine-tuning its strategy for defending mobile quarterbacks.
"You hear about his speed, but until you go against it, you don't actually know what you're facing," said defensive captain London Fletcher. "He has the talent to be able to throw the football. The speed is what will definitely shock you, and then his talent will as well."
In two seasons under defensive coordinator Jim Haslett, the Redskins are 0-5 against teams with dual-threat quarterbacks, including 0-4 against Michael Vick and the Eagles.
With both Vick and Cam Newton on the schedule for 2012, the Redskins' defense may finally have the upper hand in preparing for mobility under center.
"You get used to playing against a guy that doesn't run a lot and you don't really worry about it," said defensive end Adam Carriker. "Then all of a sudden you play against Michael Vick twice a year, you play against Cam Newton for a second year in a row, and you're not used to it.
"You focus on mobility during that week of practice, but if you've been facing it all camp, all off-season, you're so much more used to it," he continued. "It's not near as much of an adjustment when you're facing those guys everyday."
