Top quarterback prospect Dwayne Haskins needed "one small thing" from whichever franchise drafted him in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft: pair him with an Ohio State wide receiver.
It could be Parris Campbell or Terry McLaurin or Johnny Dixon. Haskins was not asking for all three. He just wanted one.
The Redskins assumed that responsibility by taking Haskins at No. 15 on Thursday night, and about 24 hours later they honored Haskins' request. By way of the 76th pick in the third round, wide receiver McLaurin was joining his college teammate in Washington.
On a conference call with reporters Friday night, McLaurin said Haskins told him he'd push for the Redskins to draft him. McLaurin said he did not put much stock into Haskins' comments -- he understands the uncertainty of the draft -- but he understood a reunion was possible.
McLaurin said he and Haskins complemented each other well at Ohio State, and the statistics back up that claim. McLaurin ranked fourth on the team in receptions (35), third in receiving yards (701), second in receiving yards (11) and first in yards per catch (20.0).
"Dwayne, he brings to the table a competitive edge," McLaurin said. "He makes my job a lot easier. When I'm out of my breaks the ball is already there in great spots for me to make plays."
McLaurin added it's a "blessing" and an "honor" to have another chance to play with Haskins, who cannot wait to get started.
