Question: Are the Redskins set at quarterback, or is there a chance the team adds another backup? Veteran quarterback Jeff Garcia is available in free agency and he has played well in the West Coast offense.

Gary: Donovan McNabb is the starter, and for now Rex Grossman is the primary backup. Colt Brennan's goal in preseason is to unseat Grossman, but he is also competing with Richard Bartel to be the third quarterback. Coaches will wait to see how each of the QBs perform in preseason before finalizing the backups. Kyle Shanahan is high on Grossman, by the way. "It's good to have him here," Kyle Shanahan said. "One, because he deserves to be here, he's very talented. Two, because he was with me for a year [in Houston] and he already knows what I'm asking him to do." As for Garcia, he could be a short-term option if Grossman struggles, but keep in mind that he is 40 years old and hasn't played regularly since 2008.

Question: Hey Gary, last season when Chad Rinehart got hurt Edwin Williams came in at guard against Dallas and did a great job. What is the status on him and the likelihood of him becoming a starter?

Gary: The Redskins will have three new starters on the offensive line in Trent Williams, Jammal Brown and Artis Hicks. That means Williams is competing for a backup job at both center (his natural position) and guard. He is in the mix with Rinehart, Will Montgomery, Kory Lichtensteiger and Erik Cook, among others. After stepping in for Rinehart in Week 11 at Dallas, Williams started the following week at Philadelphia and he also started the season finale in San Diego. This offseason, Williams, a Washington, D.C., native, has slimmed down to fit the mold of more athletic linemen preferred by the new coaching staff.

Question: Gary, a name we haven't heard for a while is Jeremy Jarmon. We didn't get to see much of him last year since he was lost to a knee ligament injury. What can we expect from him this year?

Gary: Jarmon was not able to participate in any off-season practices as he rehabbed his knee injury. His goal: be healthy for the start of training camp. Jarmon is listed as an outside linebacker now, so he faces a learning curve in the Redskins' new 3-4 defense. He is likely assured of a roster spot, but he trails the other linebackers on the roster simply because he has not had any on-field reps yet. In training camp, Jarmon must catch up quickly. He could start the season as a reserve and work his way into playing time.

Question: Hey Gary, there hasn't been a new Fan Mailbag in nearly a month. What's the deal?

Gary: The Fan Mailbag went on hiatus for a few weeks -- I needed to wrap up production of the 2010 Redskins Yearbook. I may have to put the Fan Mailbag back on hiatus again during the first two weeks of training camp, which is the busiest time of the year. But keep those questions coming -- more variety, too. I can only answer questions about the running back competition so many times!
