As big-name NFL free agents get signed by teams, Rock Cartwright continues to wait his turn.
Cartwright is one of the Redskins' top free agents this offseason.
He stopped by Redskins Park on Thursday afternoon to pick up some mail and chat with special teams coordinator Danny Smith.
As the free agent market settles down after a busy first week, Cartwright's options could pick up. For now, he awaits word from agent Drew Rosenhaus.
"I think Drew has talked to a couple teams, but no one has really [offered] anything, so for now we're waiting to see what happens," Cartwright said. "I know the market is really slow right now. We're just going to play it by ear and see what happens."
The Redskins have made an initial contract offer to Cartwright, according to executive vice president of football operations Vinny Cerrato.
But it appears Cartwright wants to test the free agent market and field other offers as well.
Cartwright has emerged as the Redskins' primary kick returner the last two seasons. He moved into fourth place on the franchise's all-time kickoff return yardage list with 3,157 total yards.
Cartwright is also valuable on special teams, notching 34 tackles on punt and kick coverage units last year.
He wants to get more playing time at running back, though. He has 647 rushing yards and six touchdowns in his six-year NFL career, but the bulk of that came in the 2003 season. Since then, he has backed up Clinton Portis and Ladell Betts.
Asked if he enjoyed the free agency process, Cartwright admitted that it was "a little frustrating" to have to watch and wait.
"I would have hoped something would have happened by now, but it hasn't," he said. "It's part of the business. I'm sure something will happen, hopefully soon.
"The big-name [free agents] go high, so you just sit back and play the waiting game."
Cartwright reiterated that he would like to stay with the Redskins.
"I would love to finish my career as a Washington Redskin, but ultimately that's not up to me," he said. "I love the organization, I love the fans and I would love to be here."
