As the Washington Redskins begin training camp practices in Richmond, four players for now have been placed on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list including tight end Jordan Reed.
The Washington Redskins open up training camp on Thursday with safety DeAngelo Hall, linebacker Houston Bates, tight end Jordan Reed and wide receiver Kendal Thompson on the Active/Physically unable to Perform (PUP) list.
The designation means players cannot practice with the team, but can attend team meetings and continue to receive treatment from the medical staff.
Hall and Bates are both recovering from torn ACL suffered during the 2016 regular season.
Now the longest tenured player on Washington's 90-man roster, Hall is entering his 10th season with the Redskins and 14th overall in the NFL. He suffered a torn ACL in the Redskins' 29-27 Week 2 victory over the New York Giants at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J.
The Virginia Tech product enters the 2017 season having played in 166 career regular season games, collecting 795 tackles with 139 passes defensed, 43 interceptions, 15 fumble recoveries, 11 fumbles forced and two sacks.
While it is expected that D.J. Swearinger and Su'a Cravens will be the team's starting safeties during the 2017 season, Hall still fills an important role for the Redskins.
"He's kind of been a mainstay here and he kind of keeps the boat from sinking from time to time," said Redskins head coach Jay Gruden. "There's some volatile people in that defensive back room from time to time and he's a calming guy, if you can believe that [laughter]. D-Hall is. He's been great. He's been a great leader for us. Unfortunately for him, injuries have shortened his season. Hopefully we'll be able to get him back at a later date, but if we don't have him back when we want to, at least he'll be in the room and still have a major influence on the team and the defense."
Bates, meanwhile, suffered a torn ACL last December in Washington's Week 15 matchup with the Carolina Panthers.
The Louisiana Tech product rarely appeared with the defensive unit during the 2016 season, mostly seeing time on the field in special teams situations. At the time of his injury, Bates' 292 special teams snaps were the most among Redskins players.
Reed, meanwhile, is entering his fifth season with the Redskins out of the University of Florida.
A 2016 Pro Bowler, Reed has recorded 248 receptions for 2,602 yards with 20 receiving touchdowns.
Last season in Week 4 against the Cleveland Browns, Reed became the fastest tight end in NFL history to reach 200 career receptions, reaching the mark in 38 games and surpassing the mark set by Pro Football Hall of Famer Kellen Winslow (39 games).
As for Thompson, he spent the 2016 season on Washington's practice squad after being signed on the first day of training camp. He split his college career between Oklahoma and Utah as a quarterback before making the transition to wide receiver at the NFL level.
