Injuries In Secondary a Primary Concern

The Redskins' defense could be without its top three cornerbacks heading into practice this week. Carlos Rogers was added to the team's list of injured players after Sunday's 17-13 win over the Arizona Cardinals.

Rogers suffered a biceps injury and his status is day-to-day. The injury was to Rogers' biceps muscle area and not his tendon, which is good news because that means he will not require season-ending surgery, team officials said.

Shawn Springs sustained back and groin injuries in Sunday's game and Walt Harris did not play due to a calf injury. Springs was classified as day-to-day. Harris's calf injury had improved after a weekend of rest, team officials said.

Their status for this Sunday's game against the Dallas Cowboys will be updated mid-week when the team submits it injury report.

"We will just have to see how these injuries play out during the week," head coach Joe Gibbs said. "It is a concern for us. We need some guys to rise up and play great for us. From an injury standpoint, we're hoping to have some miraculous comebacks."

Third-year cornerback Ade Jimoh, who replaced Springs in the lineup Cardinals game, could see increased playing time this week.

Gibbs said the team may also consider signing rookie cornerback Dimitri Patterson from the practice squad.

"Dimitri is a possibility," Gibbs said. "We like him. He's worked hard on the practice squad."

Also on defense, linebacker LaVar Arrington is expected back at practice this week. Arrington has been slowed by a thigh injury. He was inactive for the Arizona game.

Meantime, left tackle Chris Samuels was diagnosed with a mild knee sprain. He also has a sore ankle that could force him to miss practice time this week.

After the Arizona game, Samuels was optimistic that he would be available to play in the Dallas game.

Wide receiver James Thrash, who has missed the last three games with a hamstring injury, is expected to practice in a limited capacity this week.

Regarding the number of injuries, Gibbs said: "It always is a concern. But I realize there are other players who will need to step up. Up here, in the NFL, injuries are part of the game and you have to overcome those things. Hopefully, we have some players here who will make a real difference for us."
