A member of the Redskins coaching staff since 2008 and offensive coordinator the last three seasons, Sean McVay has been hired as head coach of the Los Angeles Rams.
After three seasons as offensive coordinator for the Washington Redskins, Sean McVay has been hired as the head coach for the Los Angeles Rams.
McVay, 30, is the youngest head coach ever hired in NFL history. He first entered the NFL coaching ranks with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as a coaching assistant in 2008.
After a season as tight ends coach for the UFL's Florida Tuskers, McVay joined the Redskins in 2010 as an offensive assistant before being promoted to tight end coach in 2011.
In his first season in the position as tight ends coach, McVay helped Fred Davis post career-highs in receptions (59) and receiving yards (796).
During the 2013 season, McVay helped then-rookie tight end Jordan Reed in his transition to the NFL, as the third-round pick collected 45 receptions for 499 yards despite appearing in only nine games. Reed was named to PFWA's All-Rookie Team.
Veteran Logan Paulsen, meanwhile, caught 28 passes for 267 yards and three touchdowns, which still remains his career-high.
When Jay Gruden was hired as head coach in 2014, McVay was promoted to offensive coordinator.
In his first season at the new position, McVay helped guide an offense that ranked in the top-10 in yards per play (5.7) despite Kirk Cousins, Colt McCoy and Robert Griffin III all seeing starting time at the quarterback position. Wide receiver DeSean Jackson averaged a league-best 20.9 yards per reception and a 1,000-yard season in his first year in Washington.
During the 2015 season, Cousins and Reed both were among the best players at their positions in the NFL.
In his first season as the full-time starting quarterback, Cousins passes for 4,166 yards along with 29 touchdowns to 11 interceptions while Reed led the offense in receptions (87), receiving yards (952) and receiving touchdowns (11).
That success carried over to the 2016 season, as the offense finished the year with a franchise record for total net yards in a single season (6,454).
The Redskins also had eight players finish the season with at least 500 yards from, tying the 2011 New Orleans Saints for the most in a single season in NFL history, and set another team record for passing first downs in a single season (226).
Cousins and Reed along with offensive linemen Trent Williams and Brandon Scherff were named to the 2017 Pro Bowl.
The Redskins will face the Rams in Los Angeles during the 2017 regular season.
