Antonio Brown has been named the NFC Special Teams Player of the Week, the NFL has announced. In the Redskins' 17-13 win over the Arizona Cardinals last Sunday, Brown returned a kickoff 91 yards to provide the game-winning points.
Brown fielded the kickoff and veered right to find a huge hole through the Cardinals' coverage units. As one of the fastest Redskins, Brown burst into open field and raced downfield for the score.
On his way to the end zone, Brown blew kisses to coaches and teammates on the sideline and to the fans.
It marked Brown's first career regular season touchdown and the longest kick return of his career.
It was also sweet redemption. Brown had fumbled a kickoff in the Redskins' season opener against the Chicago Bears and was released a few days later. After injuries to David Patten and James Thrash, the Redskins re-signed Brown on Nov. 23.
"It's a great story, to have Antonio bounce back like that," head coach Joe Gibbs said. "Everybody knows what we through the first part of the year. We think the world of him. For him to come back and have a day like that, I was really pleased for him as a person and for us as a football team. It came at a great time for us."
Although Thrash is expected to return soon from his hamstring injury, it's possible that Brown's performance could allow him to hold on to his kick return duties.
Brown's return was the Redskins' second kickoff return for a touchdown this season. Ladell Betts scored in Week 10 with a 94-yard return against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
