News & Notes: Good Times For Goode

Even with a foot injury, Jason Goode enjoyed his moment in the spotlight.

Goode had suffered a foot sprain--termed a turf toe--during Saturday's preseason game against the New York Jets at the Meadowlands.

The undrafted rookie out of Maryland kept competing and ended up catching the game-winning touchdown pass in a 13-10 Redskins win.

"It's all about adrenaline," Goode said when asked how he played through the injury.

Playing in a nationally televised game--on the NFL Network--will do that.

Goode is expected to be sidelined for a week as he recuperates from the injury. His foot was in a walking boot during Monday's practice.

Goode's status for next Saturday's preseason game at Carolina is uncertain.

"It's nothing big," Goode said. "It's just one of those things you have to deal with. I'm just hoping and praying for a speedy recovery."

Goode is in a tough spot as the fourth tight end on the roster.

Veterans Chris Cooley and Todd Yoder and rookie second-round pick Fred Davis are practically assured of roster spots.

It's unlikely that the Redskins will keep four tight ends.

Goode is keeping his spirits up. He could be a candidate for the Redskins practice squad. He also wants to keep making a good impression in case another NFL team is watching.

"I feel as though I need to go out there everyday and give it all I've got," Goode said. "I need to stay consistent and work on my techniques. I have complete trust in the coaches, and they'll make the right decisions. Hopefully it will all work out for the best."

Since his dramatic game-winning touchdown, Goode has been hearing from family, friends and University of Maryland fans.

It was only a preseason game, but don't tell that to Goode.

"It has been kind of a shock for me," he said. "The idea of it hasn't quite settled in yet. I've just been trying to keep up with things, learn the plays and get ready for Carolina."

At Maryland, Goode played in 38 career games with the Terrapins and finished with 36 catches for 401 yards and three touchdowns.

-- O-LINE UPDATE

Backup offensive lineman Justin Geisinger, one of the surprises of Redskins training camp, suffered a sprained left knee in practice last week.

Geisinger tried to play in Saturday's preseason game against the Jets, but he did not have enough confidence in the stability of his knee yet.

Geisinger is competing for a backup job at guard and center.

"It's unfortunate timing, but injuries happen," he said. "I feel like I'm a fast healer and I don't have a history of injuries. I hope to be back at it this week."

Meantime, Stephon Heyer returned to the practice fields, two weeks after suffering a sprained knee in the Redskins' first preseason game.

Todd Wade, who suffered an ankle injury in the same game, remains limited.

Jim Zorn said that Wade was not behind "behind the eight ball" in terms of making the final roster.

"We're not overly abundant with veteran offensive linemen, so he's a veteran and we may need him," Zorn said. "Hopefully he'll be able to play in that last preseason game against Jacksonville."

Randy Thomas participated in Monday's practice. He suffered a knee strain in the Jets game.

-- KELLY'S RETURN

Malcolm Kelly was back on the practice field on Monday to test his injured knee. He underwent arthroscopic knee surgery on Aug. 4.

Kelly took part in individual drills, but sat out team work.

"I just wanted to see how it responds," Kelly said. "I hope to come out on Tuesday and do a little bit more."

Said Jim Zorn: "Malcolm just did warm-ups and ran a few routes gingerly. He is a lot better running straight ahead right now, What he needs to do is get into a rhythm and start building that confidence up in cutting at high speed."

Could he play in this Saturday's preseason game at Carolina?

It's expected to be a game time decision.

"The way I feel now, it could be a possibility," Kelly said. "We'll just have to see."

-- LANDRY STILL SIDELINED

LaRon Landry, still rehabbing a hamstring injury, sat out practice on Monday.

He worked with physical therapist Larry Hess and athletic trainers during practice. He suffered the injury early in training camp.

Landry's status is officially day to day.

Rookie Kareem Moore continued to see reps with the first-team defense. He started last Saturday's preseason game against the Jets.

-- JAMES STATUS

Erasmus James continued to increase his practice workload on Monday and he could be available to play in Saturday's preseason game against the Panthers.

James is returning from a knee ligament injury.

He saw his first training camp action last week, but did not play in the Jets preseason game.
