LaRon Landry could be on the sidelines at least another week as he continues to rehab a hamstring injury.
Landry sat out practice again on Tuesday, instead working off to the side with athletic trainers.
If he misses this Saturday's preseason game against Carolina, then that would be four preseason games Landry would have missed.
"LaRon has continued to work and if he can end up practicing at the end of this week, I would play him [against Carolina this Saturday]," Jim Zorn said. "But it looks more likely that he will have to wait another week before he gets an opportunity to play."
Landry, in his second NFL season, played in 16 games last year and recorded 97 tackles, 1.5 sacks and seven passes defended.
He came on late in the season, recording two interceptions in the Redskins' playoff game at Seattle.
It's uncertain if Landry will be available to play in the preseason finale on Aug. 28 against Jacksonville.
Team officials remain hopeful he will be ready for the Week 1 regular season game against the New York Giants.
Defensive coordinator Greg Blache admits he is concerned the injury could slow Landry early this season. In particular, Blache wants Landry and Reed Doughty to have a good rapport on the field.
Zorn said he met with Landry on Tuesday morning.
"The only thing that I am holding on to is that he is a veteran, he understands the defense, and that he plays recklessly at full speed," Zorn said. "His leg has to be able to hold up in order to play within his frame of reference."
-- TAYLOR AND LEADERSHIP
As an 11-year NFL veteran, Jason Taylor could be regarded as a leader in the Redskins' locker room.
How does Taylor feel about it?
He said he his role would "develop as time goes on."
After all, he has been with the Redskins for just a month.
"A leader just doesn't come in and start saying things, breaking chalkboards and throwing bottles around the locker room," Taylor said. "Becoming a leader starts with your play. I am not a big rah-rah guy. I would rather go out there and play hard and show them the way to do it.
"There are times when you have to grab someone by the facemask and get things going, but that comes naturally. When you talk too much, you lose credibility. When you do the right thing, your words carry a lot more weight."
-- JAMES TO PLAY
Erasmus James is expected to play in this Saturday's preseason game against Carolina.
James has continued to increase his practice workload. He is coming off knee ligament surgery last December when he was with the Minnesota Vikings.
"He will play some, probably not until the second half," Greg Blache said. "You will see him get some snaps."
James is battling for a backup job on the Redskins' roster. He is competing with second-year player Chris Wilson and rookie Rob Jackson to be the fourth defensive end.
James is a former first-round draft pick of the Vikings. He has five career sacks.
-- HAMILTON SHINES
Justin Hamilton is making a late push for a roster spot.
The second-year safety impressed in the second half of last Saturday's preseason win over the Jets. He recorded three tackles, including one for a loss.
Hamilton was with the Redskins last offseason. He re-signed in the middle of training camp to add depth to the defensive backfield.
"He has had some bright spots," Greg Blache said. "The big thing for him is to show he can help us on special teams. I think he has shown us that he can be a capable backup safety that can develop over time.
"But if you are not one of the starting safeties, you have to be a special teams player.
