Quarterback Donovan McNabb has been ruled out of this Friday's preseason game against the New York Jets due to a sprained ankle.
McNabb's ankle was wrapped as he watched Tuesday's practice from the sidelines.
"It's still sore," head coach Mike Shanahan said.
McNabb suffered the injury in last Saturday's preseason game against the Baltimore Ravens.
Is Shanahan concerned that McNabb's injury could set back his development in the Redskins' offense?
"Well, there's nothing he can do about it," he said. "He sprained his ankle. It's quite sore. I don't think he could go if it were a regular season game, so he has to rehab it and get it better."
McNabb did not speak to the media after practice. He is scheduled to speak with reporters on Wednesday.
Rex Grossman is expected to start in place of McNabb.
Backups John Beck and Richard Bartel could both see action as they compete for the third quarterback job.
"We've had them all rotate in practice," Shanahan said.
It's possible McNabb has played his last preseason snap. Most starters do not play in the preseason finale.
McNabb has completed 16-of-34 passes for 264 yards, one touchdown and one interception in two games. His QB rating is 71.2.
McNabb has had a myriad of injuries throughout his career, but only during the 2005 and 2006 regular seasons did he miss significant time.
In 2005, he was sidelined for seven games with a sports hernia injury. A year later, he suffered a knee ligament injury midseason, costing him six games.
Since 2007, McNabb has played 14 or more games every season. He missed two games last year due to a fractured rib.

Fullback Mike Sellers and wide receiver Malcolm Kelly have been ruled out of Friday's preseason game against the New York Jets.
Sellers has a knee injury and Kelly has a hamstring injury.
It's uncertain who would start at fullback in the Redskins' offense. Darrel Young, a first-year player, is listed as Sellers' backup. The team signed 3-year veteran Carey Davis on Monday and he could be pressed into duty.
Tight end/fullback Dennis Morris suffered a knee injury in practice this week and his status is day to day.
Meantime, Kelly has not played or practiced with the team since the second day of training camp.
Kelly may be forced to earn a roster spot having played just one preseason game.
Said Mike Shanahan: "Let's not count anybody out. Let's just take it day by day. I saw him run some routes and he looked a lot better -- almost full speed straight ahead. Hopefully he'll be able to go next week."

Wide receiver Anthony Armstrong has been among the Redskins' pleasant surprises this preseason.
He leads the offense with six catches for 91 yards. He caught a 4-yard touchdown pass from Donovan McNabb in the Redskins' preseason opener against the Buffalo Bills.
"Well, when I first looked at him, he was on the practice squad, and when I came in here and took the job, I said, 'Who is that guy?'" Mike Shanahan said. "He has a lot of speed. He has been making some plays. Last week he made a couple good catches, so hopefully he can continue to do that."
Armstrong is a first-year player who was with the Miami Dolphins' practice squad in 2008. He joined the Redskins' practice squad midseason last year.
