The Redskins have placed linebacker Matt Sinclair on injured reserve and released wide receiver Burl Toler, the team announced on Monday.
The Redskins' roster now stands at 75, the league limit. The team must reduce its roster to 53 on Aug. 30.
Sinclair, a second-year player, was in the midst of a promising preseason, but he suffered a back injury last week.
He went to see a back specialist on Monday and it was determined that he could be sidelined for a significant amount of time.
Sinclair joined the Redskins in 2007 and spent the bulk of the season on the practice squad. He signed with the roster in December and played in four regular-season games, totaling three special teams tackles.
Sinclair was competing for a backup job at strong-side linebacker. He had 16 tackles in three preseason games before the injury.
Toler, a first-year player, had one catch for nine yards in preseason play this year.
The Redskins currently have nine wide receivers on the roster. The team is expected to keep only six.

Former Redskins assistant head coach Gregg Williams returns to FedExField this Thursday night as defensive coordinator of the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Williams and his replacement in Washington, Greg Blache, will share a quick hello.
But, Blache says, they both have jobs to do.
"It'll be good to see Gregg for a second and say hi," Blache said. "But my focus is on my guys. How do they look warming up? Who's ready to play?
"This is not a social visit. It's an opportunity for guys to play one more time and earn a spot on this roster."
Blache served as defensive line coach under Williams from 2004-07.

Malcolm Kelly is on track to make his preseason debut in Thursday night's game against the Jaguars.
He is not yet at full strength, though.
"Malcolm is out there running, but he's still wondering if his knee is going to hold," Jim Zorn said. "I think it's surprising him, and as he continues to work through it, he's going to get faster and faster.
"If Malcolm can get up to speed, he'll definitely play in the game. How much will he play? That's up to how he does [in Tuesday's practice]."
