News & Notes: Team Ready For Scrimmage

The Redskins-Ravens Scrimmage presented by BearingPoint on Saturday will have a distinctly different look and feel than a preseason or regular season games.

From the start of the scrimmage, at 12 noon ET, the proceedings will be controlled by coaches and referees. The football-portion of the event, which includes Fan Appreication Day, concludes at approximately 2 p.m. ET.

Starters are expected to get some reps, but coaches want to use the scrimmage as a chance to evaluate some of the young, untested players.

"It will be more about the guys that we think are going to compete [for a roster spot]," Gibbs said.

Here is the format for Saturday's scrimmage:

**-- 12 noon ET: Stretch and warm-ups

-- 12:25 p.m. ET: Special teams work

-- 12:40 p.m. ET: 7-on-7 (back to back)**

  • 15 plays--Redskins offense vs. Ravens defense
  • 15 plays--Ravens offense vs. Redskins defense
  • 15 plays--Ravens offense vs. Redskins defense
  • 15 plays--Redskins offense vs. Ravens defense

  • 10 plays--Ravens 1st off. vs. Redskins 1st def.--3 goal-line plays
  • 10 plays--Redskins 1st off. vs. Ravens 1st def.--3 goal-line plays
  • 10 plays--Ravens 2nd off. vs. Redskins 2nd def.--3 goal-line plays
  • 10 plays--Redskins 2nd off. vs. Ravens 2nd def.--3 goal-line plays
  • 10 plays--Ravens 3rd off. vs. Redskins 3rd def.--3 goal-line plays
  • 10 plays--Redskins 3rd off. vs. Ravens 3rd def.--3 goal-line plays
(2 sets of 10-plays with this group)

Other scrimmage notes:

-- Each drive begins on the 35-yard line

-- Return to the 35-yard line if team is held on downs or scores

-- After play No. 10, drive continues until the team is stopped

-- Offensive team must kick a field goal on 4th down inside the 30-yard line

-- Team can kick field goals and extra points (do not count as a play)

-- QB will not be live during any drill--they cannot be touched

-- Head coaches will be behind offensive series to determine if there is a sack

Said head coach Joe Gibbs: "Obviously we will have a real good 7-on-7 period that will give us some good work and a change up on receivers and defensive backs. The lineman will have work one-on-one while that is going on, then we will have the scrimmage at the end of it.

"I think it's a good evaluation tool. At this point in camp, everyone is tired of going against each other and it definitely excites everyone, giving them a chance to go against someone else."

-- PATTEN AT PRACTICE

One day after being discharged from the hospital after a bout with viral meningitis, wide receiver David Patten was at Redskins Park watching practice from the sidelines.

"I think David will probably be back on Monday," Gibbs said.

Patten, a 10-year veteran in his second season in Washington, is expected to be in the mix at wide receiver. Santana Moss, Antwaan Randle El and Brandon Lloyd have emerged as the top receivers, but Patten impressed coaches in off-season work.

Meantime, cornerback Carlos Rogers sat out Friday morning's practice as he continues to recover from back spasms. It is unlikely that Rogers will participate in Saturday's scrimmage.
