Head coach Mike Shanahan said rookie offensive tackle Trent Williams' MRI examination of his injured knee was negative and that he hoped to have more of an update on Wednesday.
"When I looked at film, I really didn't think it was going to be too serious," Shanahan said on Monday afternoon.
An MRI of an injured toe was also in the works, Shanahan said.
Williams, the Redskins' No. 1 draft pick, is the starting left tackle. He was injured on the second play of the team's final possession of the fourth quarter of the eventual 30-27 overtime loss to the Houston Texans.
Williams said after the game he had passed tests on the field that would indicate whether he had torn a ligament.
The Redskins can go a couple of ways if Williams is to miss this Sunday's game against the St. Louis Rams.
They can use Stephon Heyer, the four-year veteran who replaced Williams, on the left side or they can swing Jammal Brown from right tackle to left and play Heyer on the right. Brown was a two-time Pro Bowl pick as a left tackle with the New Orleans Saints.
Heyer said "it's a little more difficult to prepare" for the eventuality of playing either side but that's not likely to be a lingering issue once the club knows about Williams' health and recuperative time.
Heyer was one of three offensive linemen to start every game last year (13 at right tackle, three at left tackle).
"I've got a lot of confidence in Steph," Shanahan said. "If Trent can't play, he'll go in there and do a good job."
The Redskins dressed only seven offensive linemen for Sunday's game and all of them played. Veteran guard Will Montgomery was inactive. Right guard Artis Hicks had played right tackle during off-season workouts before the Redskins acquired Brown in a trade.
Changes up front probably won't benefit a running game that continues to struggle. The Redskins are averaging 2.7 yards a carry and have gained 107 yards in splitting their first two games.
"One thing about our running game, you have to be hitting on all cylinders," Shanahan said. "We had possibilities there. It's something we have to keep working on. It doesn't happen overnight."
Other injury updates: Wait and see on defensive lineman Albert Haynesworth (ankle) and free safety Kareem Moore (knee).
Moore practiced lightly last week and Shanahan said "hopefully we'll get to evaluate it this week."
Haynesworth, hurt in practice last Wednesday, was inactive for the Texans game.
Back soon? "You don't know," Shanahan said. "Can a guy play and move laterally and go full speed?"

The Redskins failed to properly execute a field-goal try for the second time in two games.
In the opener, the snap and hold resulted in no kick at all and a fumble charged to holder Josh Bidwell. Against the Texans, a protection breakdown allowed Houston's Bernard Pollard to block Graham Gano's 29-yard try.
"We had a bust, somebody that didn't use proper technique and (they) got a hand in there," Shanahan said.
The Redskins held a walk-through practice Monday afternoon "to correct mistakes," Shanahan said.
