Redskins Director of Sports Medicine Bubba Tyer recently was named winner of the Fain Cain Memorial Award as the NFL's Outstanding Athletic Trainer.

The prestigious award was bestowed on Tyer at the NFL Physicians Society's Annual Scientific Meeting at The Westin Hotel in Indianapolis during the recent NFL Scouting Combine.

Presenting the award was James Bradley, M.D., President, NFL Physicians Society. Tyer was introduced by Redskins Hall of Fame coach Joe Gibbs and Redskins Vice President of Football Operations Vinny Cerrato.

The Redskins also were represented at the society's annual meeting by team physician Anthony Casolaro, M.D., who delivered findings on the topic of traumatic pancreatitis. Dr. Casolaro serves as the Redskins' expert in internal medicine.

One of the most highly-respected figures in NFL athletic training circles, Tyer served as Redskins head athletic trainer for more than 30 years before taking a position in the team's administration two seasons ago.

Upon the return of Gibbs as head coach, Tyer, inducted into the Redskins' Ring of Fame at FedExField last December, came out of brief retirement to re-join the team.

In 2004, Tyer's duties as director of sports medicine will keep him closely involved with the team's athletic training department.

The staff includes head athletic trainer John Burrell, who joined the Redskins last month after working on the Jacksonville Jaguars' athletic training staff (the 2003 NFL athletic training staff of the year), assistant athletic trainer Eric Steward and physical therapist Larry Hess.
