After taking two defensive players from Alabama, the Washington Redskins have selected another defender in the third round of the NFL Draft.
On Friday evening with the No. 81-overall pick, Washington selected UCLA cornerback Fabian Moreau, the second consecutive season the Redskins have taken a cornerback in the third round.
Named to the watch list for the Nagurski Award, Moreau was a starter in all 12 games as a senior for the Bruins and led the team with 10 passed defensed. He was name an honorable mention All-Pac-12 by coaches after recording 32 tackles, two interceptions and a forced fumble.
Moreau, 6-foot, 182 pounds, made up a Bruins secondary that gave up a Pac-12 low 12 scoring passes during the season and ranked 22nd in the entire nation in interceptions (15) and 7th in team passing efficiency.
Those statistics helped vault him to becoming an NFL prospect after a junior season that was lost after three games when Moreau's season ended with a Lisfranc injury in his left foot. The Florida native still registered eight tackles and a pass breakup.
In his sophomore season, Moreau started in all 13 games and was a second-team all-conference selection. He ranked seventh on the team in tackles (53) and tied for the team lead with eight passes defensed, making his first interception at Washington.
This production all came after Moreau made the switch from offense to defense during his first year with the Bruins, making five tackles as a reserve defensive back and on special teams.
According to Lance Zierlein, "Moreau is an explosive athlete who had to transition from running back over to cornerback. While the transition has taken some time thanks to inexperience and his 2015 injury, Moreau's tape shows a more confident and consistent cover man than before."
Moreau ran a 4.35-second 40-yard dash along with a 136-inch broad jump.
Moreau suffered a torn pectoral muscle during UCLA's pro day and underwent surgery, starting a recovery time that could last until early in the season.
With his selection, Anderson joins an cornerbacks group that also features Josh Norman, Bashaud Breeland, Kendall Fuller, Quinton Dunbar, Dashaun Phillips and Tharold Simon.
