The people have spoken in favor of the Washington Redskins. Again.
A recent poll conducted by Capital Insight finds that residents of the Washington, D.C. metro area support the Redskins' name and two-thirds of all adults would not change it.
The poll was conducted via telephone between June 19-23, with more than 1,100 adults surveyed.
Citizens represent a cross-section of the district, as well as Prince George's and Montgomery counties in the state of Maryland and Alexandria, Arlington, Fairfax, Fairfax City, Falls Church, and Loudoun Counties in the commonwealth of Virginia.
Respondents were asked a range of questions, including their race, gender, age, education level, sports awareness and political affiliation.
Across all demographics, the Washington Redskins held a majority support. Of the 66 percent of those opposed to a name change, 50 percent responded "strongly."
Of the 34 percent in favor of a name change, only 18 percent felt "strongly."
This was a geographically targeted poll following up an AP national survey in May found that 80 percent of Americans support the team name.
It supports a 2004 Annenberg Survey that found that 90 percent of Native Americans support the Washington Redskins name.
Recently, Aleutian Chief Stephen Dodson told Redskins.comTV: "We don't have a problem with [the Redskins name] at all; in fact we're honored. We're quite honored."
