Practice Notes: 2015 OTAs, Day 8

The Washington Redskins on Tuesday had their eighth OTA practice of the 2015 season. Here's some notes and observations from Redskins.com's Andrew Walker.

see him really jam some wide receivers at the line once padded practices begin, particularly when the Houston Texans come for joint training camp practices Aug. 6-8 in Richmond, Va.

- There weren't many surprises along the first-unit offensive line, which included Tom Compton at left tackle, Shawn Lauvao at left guard, Kory Lichtensteiger at center, Spencer Long at right guard and Brandon Scherff at right tackle. Compton is filling in for an injured Trent Williams (ankle), who is expected to be back for training camp. Long, meanwhile, is getting his shot to show what he can do after the team released Chris Chester May 27.

- There was some shuffling and experimenting along the other offensive line units on Tuesday. One unit was Willie Smith (RT), Arie Kouandjio (RG), Josh LeRibeus (C), Tom Compton (LG) and Ty Nsekhe (RT). Interesting to see Compton – who has primarily worked at both tackle spots – getting reps at guard. Another unit was Takoby Cofield (RT), Arie Kouandjio (RG), Austin Reiter (C), Tyler Larsen (LG) and Ty Nsekhe.

- Second-round pick Preston Smith was working primarily with the first-unit defense at outside linebacker, opposite of Trent Murphy. Both are expected to get plenty of reps this season opposite starter Ryan Kerrigan, who is expected to return for training camp after getting his left knee scoped last month. Primarily working with the second-unit defense on Tuesday at outside linebacker were Trevardo Williams and Jackson Jeffcoat.

Speaking of Kerrigan, the fifth-year pro made an appearance at Tuesday's practice after having spent much of the past couple weeks hard at work rehabbing his knee inside the team facility. Kerrigan says he's progressing well – a good sign for Redskins fans, and a bad sign for opposing quarterbacks.

- Duke Ihenacho continued to get a bulk of the snaps with the first-unit defense at the strong safety position on Tuesday. Ihenacho started 14 games for a talented Denver Broncos team in 2013, and appeared in three games with the Redskins last season before suffering a season-ending foot injury. He's competing with Jeron Johnson, an offseason free agency pickup, for the starting job at strong safety.

- Linebacker Ja'Gared Davis had a nice day of work on Tuesday. The second-year pro out of SMU, working with the second-unit defense, made a nice play to step in front of a Colt McCoy pass intended for Colin Lockett and come down with the interception, drawing celebration from the entire defense both on the field and on the sideline.

- Rookie Martrell Spaight did a nice job sniffing out a screen pass from Kirk Cousins to Reggie Bell. If tackling was allowed, it likely would've resulted in a huge loss on the play.

- That exact play worked much better a few moments later, when Robert Griffin III found rookie wide receiver Jamison Crowder, who used his quickness to go untouched into the second level.

- Jackson Jeffcoat flashed on a couple plays, including one in which he made a nice move to get inside and disrupt McCoy in the backfield. It likely would've resulted in a sack.

During goal line drills, Griffin III – on the first play, 1st and Goal from the 5 – had a quick three-step drop and found Ryan Grant with a perfect pass in the corner of the end zone for the touchdown. Grant, like last year, is putting in a solid offseason.

- The Redskins had a slew of players recording punts and kicks on Tuesday. Those returning punts included Andre Roberts, Jamison Crowder, Chris Thompson, Rashad Ross and Trey Williams. Those returning kicks included Roberts, Bashaud Breeland, Crowder, Thompson and Williams. That should be another interesting battle to watch throughout the rest of the offseason and preseason.
