Welcome to 2010 Training Camp

Football is back. And hopefully the 2010 version of the Redskins is better than ever.

Of course, I'll settle for new and improved.

Training camp begins with a 4 p.m. practice. At the moment, there is a steady downpour in the Ashburn, Va., region, site of Redskins Park and Redskins Training Camp Presented by RE/MAX. Anyone who has paid attention to weather reports in recent days should know there was a chance for scattered storms.

Here's hoping the rain doesn't dampen enthusiasm.

I'm still expecting a strong turnout for the official start of the Mike Shanahan era.

Players have been in meetings all morning, including a team meeting around 1 p.m.

Rain Subsides

The downpour has ended, thankfully.

The sun is out.

And fans are already making their way to the field.

There's no doubt training camp is here now.

Unfortunately, the fields are going to be somewhat wet. Don't be surprised if practice is shortened.

First to Arrive

It's always noteworthy to find out who becomes the first Redskins player to arrive on the practice field.

This year the honor belongs to Casey Rabach, who walked alongside coaching intern Chris Samuels to the practice field.

Players are wearing shorts and have their helmets on, but no pads.

DeAngelo Hall is wearing jersey No. 2, but it's just temporary. Hall wore No. 2 at Virginia Tech.

Shanahan Arrives

There is a media contingent waiting for the arrival of Albert Haynesworth to training camp. Apparently they are waiting for the first training camp glimpse of the Redskins' defensive lineman.

Instead, it is Mike Shanahan who walks out of the facility. He smiles broadly for the cameras.

Further down the walkway, Shanahan greets ESPN's John Clayton and two talk on the way to the practice fields.

McNabb's Welcome

The Redskins' new quarterback received a hearty welcome from fans.

One fan shouted out, "Welcome to D.C., Donovan McNabb."

Looks like it's a great turnout of fans for the first day of training camp.

Who's Not Here?

Two notable Redskins are not in attendance at practice.

First, Albert Haynesworth is not on the practice field, an indication that he did not pass his conditioning test.

Mike Shanahan is sure to address Haynesworth's situation after practice.

Prior to practice, about a dozen reporters stood outside the practice facility waiting for Haynesworth to walk out the doors and head to the practice field. He never came, though. Turns out he is staying in the weight room working out with strength and conditioning coach Ray Wright.

Second, Trent Williams is not in attendance, an indication that he does not have a rookie contract in place.

Everyone seems convinced that the Williams deal will be finalized soon. Until he's signed, sealed and delivered, he's losing out on valuable practice time.

Coaching Interns

The Redskins could field a great team of coaching interns this training camp.

Joining Chris Samuels as part of the Minority Coaching Fellowship program are Terrell Davis, Steve Atwater and Michael Pittman.

Davis, of course, played for Mike Shanahan in Denver and rushed for 7,607 yards – including 2008 yards in 1998 – in eight NFL seasons. He also helped lead the Broncos to a pair of Super Bowl championships in 1997-98.

Atwater was also a part of the Broncos' two Super Bowl championship teams. Regarded as a ferocious hitter, Atwater posted 24 interceptions in his 11-year NFL career.

Pittman rushed for 5,627 yards in 11 NFL seasons with the Arizona Cardinals, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Denver Broncos.

Expect to hear more about Davis, Atwater and Pittman in the days ahead.

Davis and Atwater are Hall of Fame-caliber players, so it's noteworthy that they are participating at Redskins training camp.

Rough Going For QBs

I'm having some wireless connectivity problems outside Redskins Park, so updates are going to have to be brief.

That may work out for the best, because it appears practice is going to be shortened. The field is wet and the ball is slick. Already Donovan McNabb has had two fumbled snaps.

Here are some highlights from the 11-on-11 work:

• Chris Horton leveled the hit of the day, breaking up a pass across the middle to Anthony Armstrong. "Get your job back!" a fan yelled.
• Larry Johnson impressed by weaving past tacklers on a run to the left. Once in the clear, he sprinted to the end zone, drawing applause from fans.
• Donovan McNabb threw a pass behind rookie Terrence Austin and the ball was dropped.
• McNabb made up for it on the next play by throwing a perfectly timed pass to Armstrong along the left sideline. Armstrong came back for the ball and made a nice catch ahead of Kareem Moore.
• Rex Grossman drops back and throws deep to Austin, but the ball is out of reach. Too bad – Austin had a step on his closest defender.
• Grossman rolled left...and rolled left...and rolled left…until he threw across his body to Mike Furrey. The pass was high, but Furrey made a leaping catch.
• Richard Bartel underthrew a pass to Austin on the left sideline, allowing Doug Dutch to come in and swipe the ball away.
• In what amounts to a bad decision by Bartel, he floats a pass downfield but did not see Lendy Holmes in coverage. Holmes easily picked off the pass and raced the other way.

Did I Just Hear…?

One fan standing along the fence of the main practice field was getting on Donovan McNabb quite a bit.

At one point, he shouted, "We want Campbell!"

Fans went "Oooooh" after that remark.

Well, Campbell is in Oakland now so that ship has sailed.

As for McNabb, it's clear he still must win over a segment of fans who still view him as an Eagle.

Practice Ends

As expected, the Redskins shortened practice due to the wet field.

Players huddled up at midfield to hear Mike Shanahan's message.

Reporters scurried across the field to interview players.

"We had a great day of practice," London Fletcher said. "All the players were out here working hard and everyone was looking forward to the first training camp practice with Coach Shanahan. Everybody was here today and Coach Shanahan thought we were buying into what he was doing.

"The weather was a little bit difficult for us because it was raining earlier and then very humid later on, but that's what training camp is for."

Added Larry Johnson: "It's always good when people recognize that you are from here and grew up around this area. It's great to have fans come out. It's actually my first time having a training camp where you're at home. In Kansas City, we always went up to Wisconsin. It's great. It's a nice showing that everyone came to support."

Haynesworth Sighting

Just as practice ended, out walked Albert Haynesworth.

Walking with Ray Wright, Haynesworth made his way to the far practice field. For 20 minutes, he worked with defensive coordinator Jim Haslett and defensive line coach Jacob Burney on some drills, including technique.

Afterwards, Haynesworth exited the practice field and walked by a large group of Redskins fans seeking autographs.

Despite all of the controversy surrounding Haynesworth, he was well-received by fans.

Haynesworth waved at the fans and then tossed a green towel to one of them as he headed inside the facility.
