QB Jayden Daniels | 'We have to execute better'

OPTION 1 - LOGO ONLY

Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels addressed the media after the team's loss to Tampa Bay. Here is a full transcript of the press conference.

What did you think about your first official game?

JAYDEN DANIELS: I grade myself hard. We didn't win. I'm a competitor. I like to win, but overall it went well, pretty well.

There's some stuff that as an offense we left on the field. We have to execute better, but it's a long season. We're going to move on from this.

Sam Cosmi said in the locker room that he was really impressed with your poise throughout the entire game. Even at the point where the result was already known, you kept your poise. You kept kind of motivating the team moving forward. Is it significant to you to know that a more veteran teammate has that confidence and was impressed by you during that part of the game.

JAYDEN DANIELS: Yeah, that speaks volumes, especially from somebody that obviously did it at a high level, you know, got to the second contract, stuff like that, that's been playing at a high level.

For him to say that about me, that means a lot. Especially that's the type of teammate I'm trying to be where somebody can look at me and say, Hey, no matter what, that kid is going to give it his all.

You ran a fair amount. You ran effectively. The amount of 16 rushes, was that more than you would have liked, or did you feel comfortable with each time that you took off --

JAYDEN DANIELS: I'm going to do whatever it takes to try to win the football game. I don't put a number or anything on how many times I'm going to run and stuff like that, but I just try to do whatever it takes to help the team win the game.

Did that feel like a cheap shot, the hit to the head?

JAYDEN DANIELS: No, not at all. I mean, I play football, so maybe some other people might look at it like that, but, no, not at all.

This is a defense that likes to blitz and (indiscernible) heavily. Did you feel like the line held up? Just generally, how do you feel like the offense as a whole...

JAYDEN DANIELS: 100%. I was actually -- that's a good defense over a good team, obviously with Todd Bowles calling it. But, you know, seeing it out there, being able to pick up the blitzes, if they come, I was able to make a couple of people miss.

Moving forward, that just shows that, hey, this kid has a plan. He's not going to be back there and not seeing stuff or try to be a sitting duck or stuff like that.

What did you feel best about what you showed today?

JAYDEN DANIELS: Me personally?

Yes.

JAYDEN DANIELS: I would just say the fight until the end. Obviously it's not the way we wanted it to go, but we finished strong and ended up in the end zone, and we can build on it for next week.

A lot of stuff happened at the line of scrimmage in the pass game. Was that the design, or was that what Tampa gave you?

JAYDEN DANIELS: That's what Tampa gave us. They did a good job of dropping to their spots in their zone and forcing us to take the underneath stuff. Obviously there's times where we had a spot. I missed Terry. One I wish I could have back.

It's a long season, man. We're going to hit a couple of those, but you know, Tampa did a good job with their scheme, especially in the second half -- or both halves. We're going to sit back and drop into our spots and force this kid to beat us.

I was patient enough to go out there and take the check-downs, man. Then when we had the opportunity to take a shot deep, we have got to hit them.

Dan was saying that you don't want to go through games like this, but it helps form the identity of the group. What do you think about your identity and what you will gain going forward from this?

JAYDEN DANIELS: Man, I can't really speak for the whole team. I don't want to speak for the defensive guys, but on the offensive side, man, we can't shoot ourselves in the foot. Once we get rolling, we get rolling.

But, you know, we're going to fight. On both sides of the ball we're going to fight until the end, and that's one thing we showed.

You said originally that you don't get nervous, you don't get rattled in the game. How did that aspect go today playing your first game?

JAYDEN DANIELS: It's the same thing I said. Once that ball was snapped, it goes away and you are playing football again. It's the same game I've been playing since I was a kid.

Even though the stakes are higher, I still revert back to the time where I was 7 years old playing against my friends.

I'm sure you figured with few reps during the preseason, that there was going to be some back-and-forth and stumbles maybe at the beginning. So how do you go, Okay, I understand that this comes with it?

JAYDEN DANIELS: Man, the last play don't matter. It doesn't matter if it's a touchdown, interception, incompletion. It doesn't matter.

You have to be able to have a short-term memory, refocus for the next play.

Your helmet popped off. Did that ever happen to you --

JAYDEN DANIELS: For sure, yeah.

wice a game?

JAYDEN DANIELS: Yeah, probably. I don't know, but probably though.

Do you like to wear your helmet a little bit looser?

JAYDEN DANIELS: Yeah. A lot of people probably try to say something about that, but honestly, I'm just playing football back there. Your helmet is going to pop off no matter what, if you have it buckled up tight or loose at the end of the day.

There was a lot of talk about protecting yourself. How did you feel? You ran a lot, but how did you feel you did in that area?

JAYDEN DANIELS: I think that's a question for the coaches (laughing). They've got to determine that, but no, I got down, got what I could get.

Obviously, you know, that one hit and the one on the goal line, that was nothing. I wasn't going to go down for that. I got to score, so...

Was there anything they were doing defensively that was maybe surprising, or was it what you anticipated based on what you saw in college?

JAYDEN DANIELS: I mean, kind of what I've seen on film. Everybody is going to stay true to themselves and what their scheme is, but they're going to try to throw a curve ball at us. But, you know, like I said, we just have to execute next time.

What's your process for sort of breaking down a game, and how long do you give yourself to stew on a loss?

JAYDEN DANIELS: I'm past it tomorrow. It doesn't matter no more. We're on to New York. 5
