Head coach Joe Gibbs said Monday that he expects to talk with Patrick Ramsey over the next few weeks about the quarterback's future with the club.
The two met on Monday morning, two days after the Redskins were defeated by the Seattle Seahawks 20-10 in the NFC Divisional Playoffs.
"Patrick and I had a good talk," Gibbs said. "Both of us felt like, 'Hey, the season is just over with, and we haven't had much chance to sit and think about [Ramsey's future].' So what we agreed to do is just continue to talk over these next few weeks. He'll just do some thinking and I'll do some thinking."
Ramsey is under contract for next season. If the team and Ramsey part ways, it would have to be through a release or a trade.
Talking with reporters on Monday, Ramsey also indicated he is uncertain about his future in Washington.
"I don't really know the situation yet," Ramsey said when asked to discuss his status with the team. "Nothing has really unfolded yet. We'll talk with Coach Gibbs throughout the offseason and we'll see what happens."
Added Ramsey: "I'd like to play, obviously. That was my concern when everything took place. If I'm going to develop in this league and play well, it needs to start at some point soon."
Ramsey began the 2005 season as the team's starting quarterback, but Gibbs decided to start Mark Brunell after Week 1.
Ramsey would go on to play in four games overall, completing 15-pf-25 passes for 279 yards, one touchdown and one interception.
In Week 16 against the New York Giants, when Brunell left the game with a knee injury, Ramsey came in and completed 5-of-7 passes for 104 yards. He threw a 72-yard touchdown pass to Santana Moss to help lead the Redskins to a 35-20 win.
Despite not playing, Ramsey said he learned last season by watching Brunell, a 13-year NFL veteran.
"I watched Mark do a lot of good things," Ramsey said. "He had some tough situations, against some good teams and some good defenses. He was in a lot of different situations, as far as having the lead and coming from behind.
"He did a great job all season long and I learned a lot from him as far as checking down and knowing when to run with the ball. Those are the things you know, but seeing him do things, it kind of reinforces the idea that you may have had in your head."
On Monday, Brunell was asked his thoughts on Ramsey's future with the club.
"I don't know what's going to happen," Brunell said. "It's not up to us--it's up to the coaches and the organization. I do know this: Patrick has a bright future. He's a good football player. He's only been at this thing four years. I think he's a guy who can not only start in this league, but be very effective and lead a team."
