The Redskins have signed veteran quarterback Todd Collins, the team announced on Tuesday. Collins will provide depth at the Redskins' quarterback position.

Collins has played the last eight seasons in Kansas City. The last five seasons, he has worked under current Redskins associate head coach-offense Al Saunders, who joined the Redskins' coaching staff in January.

It is expected that Collins will compete for a backup job with the Redskins. The team returns quarterbacks Mark Brunell and Jason Campbell next season. It is expected that Patrick Ramsey will be traded this offseason.

Collins, 6-4 and 228 pounds, originally entered the league as a second-round draft choice (45th overall) of the Buffalo Bills in the 1995 NFL Draft. He spent three seasons with the Bills before joining the Chiefs in 1998.

During his career, Collins has appeared in 40 games with 17 starts and completed 302 of 546 passes for 3,447 yards, 17 touchdowns and 19 interceptions. He has seen limited action during the last few seasons while serving as a backup to the durable Trent Green in Kansas City.

A former Michigan Wolverine, Collins finished his college career with the best career (64.3 percent) and single-season (65.3 percent in 1993) completion percentage in school history.

He completed 457 passes on 711 attempts, good for 5,858 yards, 34 touchdowns and 17 interceptions at Michigan.
