Redskins Add Davis, Kelly In Second Round

The Redskins continued to add young playmakers to their offense, drafting USC tight end Fred Davis and Oklahoma wide receiver Malcolm Kelly in the second round of Saturday's NFL Draft.

Davis and Kelly should provide depth and versatility to the offense. The team already has chosen Michigan State wide receiver Devin Thomas earlier in the second round.

Here's more on Davis and Kelly:

-- Fred Davis, TE, USC

The Redskins selected USC tight end Fred Davis with the second of their three second-round draft picks on Saturday.

Davis, 6-3 and 247 pounds, was the 48th overall selection in the draft.

He was a solid pass-catching tight end for the Trojans.

Davis joins a Redskins tight end corps that includes a Pro Bowler in Chris Cooley and a veteran backup in Todd Yoder.

Davis feels he can be a deep threat catching the ball in the Redskins' offense.

"I can catch the ball and get upfield," he said. "I can definitely make plays and if I am taught the right technique, I feel I can block as well."

In four seasons, he started 28 contests and caught 117 passes for 1,408 yards and 13 touchdowns.

He had his most productive season as a senior, catching 62 passes for 881 yards and eight TDs.

For his efforts, Davis was USC's first All-American first-team tight end since 1974. He also won the Mackey Award as the college's top tight end.

-- Malcolm Kelly, WR, Oklahoma

The Redskins selected Oklahoma wide receiver Malcolm Kelly with their third second-round draft pick on Saturday.

Kelly was the 51st overall pick in the draft.

Kelly, 6-3 and 219 pounds, made the most of his opportunities at run-oriented Oklahoma and ended up becoming one of the elite wide receivers in Sooners history.

He ranks second on the Sooners' all-time record list for receiving yardage (2,285), touchdowns (21) and games with at least 100 yards receiving (nine).

Playing split end, Kelly played in 39 games in three seasons and caught 144 passes with the Sooners.

Now he brings that experience to the Redskins.

"I bring consistency," he said. "I'm a guy who is going to show up every day. I don't give you any problems off the field. I'm going to be a strong competitor day in and day out."

Kelly joins Michigan State wide receiver Devin Thomas, the Redskins' top pick in the draft,

Kelly was surprised to be drafted in the second round. He expected to be a first-round pick, possibly to the Redskins at No. 21.

"It kind of shocked me that no wide receiver went in the first round," he said. "To get me and Devin, two young guys--I am exited about him being able to play, so we can just come there and help the team.
