Redskins owner Daniel M. Snyder updated the team's head coaching search on Tuesday, saying that he hopes to have a decision "very soon."

"We're going back to work [Tuesday] night and hopefully we'll make the right decision in the very near future," Snyder said. "We told everybody we would do a full process and it got delayed into the playoffs.

"We would have obviously liked to have interviewed everyone sooner, but we're going to finalize our decision in the near future."

Through the interview process, the Redskins have declined to identify specific candidates.

Asked if he hoped to have a new head coach in place by the end of this week, Snyder replied: "I wouldn't say what particular day, but hopefully very soon. We've been working hard the whole time and being very thorough with all of our research and references.

"We're going over every detail. We're trying to do the right thing."

Snyder said the coaching search has been "very different" from the team's last one following the 2003 season. The Redskins were able to lure Hall of Fame coach Joe Gibbs out of retirement that year.

After four seasons, Gibbs retired again on Jan. 7, 2008, two days after the Redskins' season ended with a 35-14 Wild Card playoff loss to Seattle.

Gibbs has stayed on as a special advisor, and Snyder said that he and Gibbs talk almost every day.
