The Washington Redskins announced this morning that they have terminated the contract of vested veteran wide receiver Devery Henderson.

No corresponding move is scheduled for now, as the team is set to break camp in Richmond in two days. The deadline for roster cuts to 75 players does not occur for another 10 days.

Henderson (5-11, 200) was originally drafted by the Saints in the second round of the 2004 NFL Draft (50th overall).

He spent his first nine NFL seasons with the team, playing 124 games with 76 starts and compiling 245 receptions for 4,377 receiving yards and 20 receiving touchdowns. Last season, Henderson appeared in 15 games with nine starts for the Saints, catching 22 passes for 316 yards with one touchdown.

Henderson played collegiately at LSU from 2000-03, appearing in 42 career games as both a wide receiver and a running back.

For his career, he caught 77 passes for 1,310 receiving yards (17.0 avg.) and 19 receiving touchdowns in addition to adding 433 rushing yards on 83 carries with three rushing touchdowns.

Henderson told Redskins.com that he was excited for his opportunity in Washington to win another Super Bowl ring.

He has been absent from camp since Monday, Aug. 5, and head coach Mike Shanahan told the media that he has been dealing with a death in his immediate family.

With his dismissal, the Redskins still have 11 receivers on the roster: Dezmon Briscoe, Skye Dawson, Pierre Garçon, Leonard Hankerson, Lance Lewis, Joshua Morgan, Santana Moss, Chip Reeves, Aldrick Robinson, Donté Stallworth and Nick Williams.

Henderson did not appear in the first preseason game against the Tennessee Titans. The team's leading receiver in that game was Morgan, who caught all three passes thrown his way for 39 yards.

Hankerson logged the unit's loan touchdown and caught four-of-five targets for 38 yards. At the time, his touchdown tied the game at 14.

The team has five days until the preseason home opener vs. the Pittsburgh Steelers at FedExField on Monday Night Football.
