The Redskins have released running back James Davis, head coach Mike Shanahan confirmed on Monday.

Davis, a second-year player, has been absent from the Redskins since he left without telling coaches on Aug. 16.

The Redskins had placed him on the reserve/left team list, which allowed them to retain his rights. In the end, they decided to release Davis outright.

Davis joined the Redskins midway through the 2010 season. He played in three games and had 15 carries for 51 yards. He also caught four passes for 45 yards.

Davis faced long odds to make the Redskins' roster this year. Along with veteran Tim Hightower acquired in a trade, the team added rookie draft picks Roy Helu and Evan Royster last offseason.
