Redskins Exercise Fifth-Year Option On Brandon Scherff, Re-Sign OL Tony Bergstrom

LOUDOUN COUNTY, Va. – The Washington Redskins announced today that they have exercised their fifth-year option on the contract of guard Brandon Scherff and re-signed offensive lineman Tony Bergstrom.

Scherff (6-5, 319) entered the league as the Redskins' first-round selection (No. 5 overall) in the 2015 NFL Draft. In his first three NFL seasons, Scherff has started every game in which he's appeared, including 46 regular season games and one postseason contest.

Scherff earned back-to-back Pro Bowl selections during the 2016-17 seasons after collecting PFWA All-Rookie honors during the Redskins' division-winning campaign in 2015. He became the first Redskins interior lineman to earn multiple Pro Bowl selections since Pro Football Hall of Fame guard Russ Grimm's streak of four consecutive Pro Bowl honors from 1983-86, and he also became the first Redskins offensive lineman to earn multiple Pro Bowl selections within the first three seasons of an NFL career since Chris Samuels in 2001-02.

Scherff played collegiately at Iowa, where he appeared in 43 games with 36 starts. As a senior, he earned unanimous consensus All-American honors in addition to receiving the Outland Trophy, awarded annually to the best interior lineman by the Football Writers Association of America.

Scherff, 26, attended Denison (Iowa) H.S., where he played offensive and defensive lineman in his final two seasons after playing quarterback as a sophomore. A multi-sport athlete, he also participated in baseball, basketball, tennis and track and field. He was born on Dec. 26, 1991.

Bergstrom (6-5, 315) originally entered the NFL as a third-round selection of the Oakland Raiders (No. 95 overall) in the 2012 NFL Draft. He has appeared in 53 regular season games with seven starts in a career that includes stints with the Oakland Raiders, Houston Texans, Arizona Cardinals, Baltimore Ravens and Washington Redskins.

Last season, Bergstrom played in 13 games and matched his career high with three starts. He appeared in four games with the Ravens in Weeks 1-7 before joining the Redskins on Oct. 25 and playing in nine games with three starts at center for Washington.

Bergstrom played collegiately at Utah, appearing in 48 games with 39 starts at right tackle during his four-year career. He earned first-team All-Pac-12 honors as a senior in 2011.

Bergstrom, 31, attended Skyline H.S. in Salt Lake City, Utah, where he earned All-State honors as a senior in 2004. He was born Aug. 6, 1986.
