The Redskins continued to remake their defense in the NFL Draft, selecting defensive lineman Jarvis Jenkins with their first second-round pick.
Jenkins, 6-4 and 309 pounds, is expected to play defensive end in Jim Haslett's 3-4 scheme in Washington.
"He has pretty good size, good quickness, explosion," head coach Mike Shanahan said. "I like the way he reacts and plays the run. He has the skills we look for."
One draft guide compared his potential to Pro Bowl lineman Jay Ratliff of the Dallas Cowboys.
Jenkins was a standout lineman at Clemson, starting the last three years and earning first-team All-ACC honors as a senior last season. He posted 53 tackles, nine tackles for a loss and one sack in 2010.
Jenkins is regarded as stout against the run, posting 164 career tackles and 31 tackles for a loss. He is still developing as a pass rusher, logging just five career sacks.
"I'm a run-stopper, I'm physical at the point of attack," Jenkins said. "I have a quick first step. I can play double-teams. I have a big body and I can hold me point pretty well. I have a little more work to do on the pass rush."
Playing special teams at Clemson, Jenkins also blocked four field goal attempts.
Jenkins, 23, joins a defensive end group that has a mix of veterans -- Phillip Daniels, Vonnie Holliday -- and youth -- Adam Carriker, Jeremy Jarmon.
Jenkins has experience playing nose tackle as well and could see action there, although Shanahan was clear that defensive end would be his primary position.
