The Washington Redskins are taking on the New York Jets at FedExField for the second game of the preseason. Here's a running list of highlights from the game.
Alex Smith and Vernon Davis continued the chemistry they had in San Francisco, making a connection to get the Redskins a first down. In his first drive as a Redskin, Smith threw to Davis for a 16-yard reception and to eventually set up the game's first field goal.
First-round pick Daron Payne did not disappoint in his first outing at FedExField. Shedding blockers with ease, the former Alabama standout sacked Jets quarterback Sam Darnold to force a fourth down.
When the Redskins needed a defensive lift, Deshazor Everett delivered with the assistance of fourth-round pick Troy Apke. The special teams captain deflected Darnold's pass in the second quarter, with Apke diving to the ground to come down with the interception and give the ball back to the Redskins on a fourth-and-1.
To get the Redskins a score to end the second half, Colt McCoy hit Cam Sims for a 27-yard gain. The catch set the Redskins up in field goal position, putting them ahead 9-3 going into the locker room.
Like the running backs had shown throughout training camp, an undrafted rookie gave the Redskins a spark on the ground. Martez Carter blasted through the Jets secondary for 33 yards that allowed Dustin Hopkins to nail his fourth field goal of the game with 4:40 left in the third quarter.
The Jets may have taken the lead with a field goal, but the Redskins were the last ones to strike. A Kevin Hogan pass to Sims for 20 yards set Hopkins up for a 40-yard field goal, which he nailed to give the Redskins their first preseason win.
