The Washington Redskins kicked off the Fantennial Weekend on Friday night with a big surprise for the Oxon Hill Clippers high school football team.

With some help from former wide receiver Josh Morgan Sr. and cornerback Fred Smoot, the Redskins surprised the Clippers' players with a Redskins "Friday Night Lights" themed takeover that included unique throwback jerseys for the team to wear during their homecoming game that evening.

"This is all about them. Being here as a Redskins ambassador is great, man, but to do something like this for these guys is truly special" said Morgan, a former H.D. Woodson and Virginia Tech alum. "Being back in the Friday night lights atmosphere ... there's nothing like it in this area."

"We got to get these boys ready to play" said Smoot, who was a mainstay of Redskins' secondary for seven seasons. "Being back in the locker room before going out there playing ball, man I love it. It's an honor to be here and I'm excited to see what these guys do tonight."

On the field, Morgan and Smoot joined both teams for the singing of the national anthem and served as honorary captains for the evening.

The event also featured homecoming-themed elements, as each fan in attendance received a Redskins-branded Friday Night Lights rally towel. Larry Carmichael, a native of Oxon Hill for more than 30 years, described the event as "a great night of football for all." On the field, Oxon Hill outscored visiting Northwest, 35-8, in the second half en route to a 51-21 victory that improved their record to 6-1.

"I've been watching football for so long," Carmichael said. "Friday nights are my evenings where you can really feel the impact that [football] has on this area. ... It's packed here, and everyone is excited to watch some football."

The event kicked off Fantennial Weekend and preceded Saturday's Redskins Day of Service, which included a complete renovation of the Oxon Hill High School weight room, a KaBOOM! playground build at the National Children's Center and a renovation of the Sports Lounge at the USO Warrior and Family Center on Fort Belvoir.

The Fantennial Weekend ran through the final whistle of Sunday's Redskins Alumni Homecoming game at FedExField against the San Francisco 49ers. Redskins alumni from years past gathered on the field for a pregame ceremony during which they were recognized for their contributions to the Redskins organization over the years.

Among them was  former Redskins quarterback Sonny Jurgensen, whowas recognized for his 54 years of dedication to the Redskins organization. Additionally, former Redskins tackle Chris Samuels was inducted as the 51st member of the Redskins Ring of Fame at halftime. He joined former linebacker London Fletcher as the 2019 honorees.
