The Washington Redskins have kicked off their first preseason game of 2018 against the New England Patriots. Here's a running list of highlights from the game.
When things looked slow for the Redskins, Robert Davis sped things along. Colt McCoy hit Davis early in the first quarter on a slant pass route, where the second-year receiver showcased his speed for 20 yards and a first down.
Byron Marshall's first play of the game swung the momentum towards Washington's favor. McCoy connected with the third-year running on an out route towards the sidelines, where Marshall darted past the secondary and inched his way into the end zone that gave the Redskins their first score of the preseason with 6:33 left in the first quarter.
Not only did McCoy show how valuable his arm is in the first half, but how he can escape the Patriots' blitzes with ease. The Texas product made up for the lost yardage from a holding penalty on the previous play to earn a 14-yard gain that ultimately resulted in a first down after a New England penalty.
While Cam Sims did not get that many looks in Alabama's offense, he is getting plenty of opportunities to show out in Thursday's first half. The rookie wide receiver came up with the longest reception for the Redskins in the first half with a 57-yard catch and run, juking the defense and making tacklers miss to put Washington two yards away from a score. Sims led the Redskins in receiving in the first half with 74 yards.
Thanks to Sims' 57-yard reception, the Redskins were put in an easy position to extend their lead. McCoy threw his second touchdown pass of the day, finding an open Maurice Harris for a three-yard score with 4:20 left to go in the second quarter. Harris caught three passes for 22 yards in the first half, adding a 20-yard punt return in the process.
The Redskins struggled to generate offense in the second half, while the Patriots finally got theirs going. New England ended the game scoring 23 unanswered points in the second half that gave Washington the 26-17 defeat. The Redskins host the Jets next Thursday.
