The Washington Redskins will have to move forward without Andre Roberts during the last two games of the 2015 regular season, as the team announced on Monday that the sixth-year veteran will be placed on the season-ending injured-reserve list with a torn meniscus in his right knee.
In other roster moves on Monday, the Redskins announced they have placed tight end Ray Hamilton on the practice squad/injured list and signed back wide receiver Colin Lockett to the practice squad.
Roberts was inactive for the Redskins' last three games as he mulled the possibility of playing through the pain or undergoing surgery.
Roberts will finish the 2015 season with career lows across the board in receiving, as he hauled in just 11 receptions for 135 yards and didn't tally a receiving touchdown for the first time in his six years in the NFL.
The Citadel product at times played a vital role in the kick return game, however, as he logged seven returns for 231 yards.
Ninety-nine of those yards came on a kickoff return for touchdown against the Carolina Panthers in Week 11.
"It was a middle return for us and guys did a great job blocking," Roberts said. "There was a big hole there, and I just cut off some blocks… I think it was DY [Darrel Young] who came up with a big block in the second level that helped me to bring it to the house."
Roberts also was used in a lot of blocking situations as well on offense.
Without Roberts, who was acquired in free agency last year, Rashad Ross and Ryan Grant will likely continue to see more playing time.
Ross was already the team's primary kick returner, but the Arizona State product could see additional action on offense behind DeSean Jackson, Pierre Garçon and Jamison Crowder.
"We like Ross," Gruden said last week. "Ross gives you that added element of speed. He's doing a good job. He's playing behind three, four very good receivers. He's waiting his turn."
Grant, meanwhile, was used more frequently during the first half of the season, filling in for Jackson as he recovered from a hamstring injury.
In 14 games this season, Grant has 19 receptions for 226 yards.
The second-year Tulane product hauled in the first touchdown of his career against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in a 31-30 Week 7 victory.
Monday's roster moves leaves the Redskins with a spot to fill on their active 53-man roster.
