The Washington Redskins announced today they have re-signed defensive tackle Joe Salave'a. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Salave'a is a solid defensive tackle and a key contributor to a Redskins defense that finished the season ranked third in the NFL last season. He was an important part of the defensive line that held opposing teams to 81.5 rushing yards per game, which ranked second in the NFL.

In his first year with the Redskins, Salave'a turned in one of his most productive seasons. He played in 15 games, starting a career-high nine, and totaled 30 tackles (22 solo) and two sacks. He spent his previous five seasons playing for the Tennessee Titans (1998-2002) and the San Diego Chargers (2003).

During his first three seasons with the Titans his defensive coordinator was current Redskins Assistant Head Coach for Defense Gregg Williams. In 2000, Salave'a had his most prolific season totaling 43 tackles (22 solo) and four sacks.

Salave'a entered the league in 1998 when he was drafted by the Tennessee Titans in the fourth round (107th overall) of the NFL Draft. He played his college ball at the University of Arizona, where he was first team All-Pac 10 as a senior. During his college career, he appeared in 44 games and totaled 157 tackles, 21.5 sacks and six forced fumbles.
