Redskins Re-sign Schmitt to Roster

The Redskins have re-signed first-year tight end Pete Schmitt, the team announced on Thursday.

Schmitt is a 6-3, 252-pounder who spent the 2007 training camp with the Redskins. He suffered a shoulder injury in preseason and was released with an injury settlement.

In college, Schmitt starred at Wisconsin-Whitewater where he totaled 108 catches for 1,231 yards and 14 touchdowns during four seasons.

As a senior at Wisconsin-Whitewater, he helped lead the football team to a second consecutive WIAC championship and to the NCAA Division III championship game.

Schmitt re-joins a tight ends group that includes starter Chris Cooley and primary backup Todd Yoder.

Schmitt is expected t o compete for playing time with Tyler Ecker, another first-year player. Ecker was the Redskins' seventh-round draft pick in 2007, but he spent the year on injured reserve.
