The Redskins have re-signed linebacker Warrick Holdman, the team announced on Tuesday. Holdman, an eight-year veteran, is expected to compete for playing time--and possibly a starting assignment--at the weak-side linebacker position.

In his first season in Washington, Holdman played in 14 games last year, starting the first seven games of the season at weak-side. He logged 38 tackles (23 solo) and one fumble recovery.

Holdman lost the starting job midseason to LaVar Arrington, who was returning from a 2004 knee injury. Arrington has since left the team.

Chris Clemons, another candidate for the weak-side starting job next season, replaced Holdman or Arrington on third downs last season.

It's possible that assistant head coach-defense Gregg Williams will employ the same approach at weak-side in 2006.

The 6-1, 243-pounder has played in 89 games with 70 starts in his career, including stints with the Chicago Bears and Cleveland Browns. He has tallied 560 tackles (364 solo), one interception, four sacks and nine forced fumbles.

Holdman began his career as a fourth-round draft choice (106th overall) by the Bears and played under linebackers coach Dale Lindsey and defensive coordinator-defensive line coach Greg Blache in Chicago.

He had his best season in 2001 with the Bears, setting career-high with 145 tackles (101 solo) and three forced fumbles.
