The Redskins have released quarterback Casey Bramlet, the team announced on Monday.

There are now four quarterbacks on the Redskins' roster: starter Jason Campbell and backups Mark Brunell, Todd Collins and Jordan Palmer.

"[Bramlet] wasn't going to get much from a reps standpoint with us, so we felt like we needed to go ahead and let him go," head coach Joe Gibbs said. "I hated to do it because guys like that would love to have a chance to play a whole preseason game.

"We just couldn't afford to do it. We're trying to get our quarterbacks here as much work as possible."

It appears Bramlet was beaten out by Palmer, the Redskins' sixth-round draft pick last April, in the first week of training camp.

Palmer tossed a 24-yard touchdown pass in Saturday's Redskins-Ravens scrimmage, which may have been enough to solidify his roster spot.

Said Palmer: "When you only get a couple of plays, you can either do really well or really poorly. I feel as if I did really well and took advantage of the opportunities that were given to me.

He added: "Now that we are going down to four quarterbacks, it should be easier to get more opportunities."

Bramlet re-signed with the Redskins last January and was allocated to NFL Europa, where he led Hamburg to a World Bowl championship and earned MVP honors in the title game.

A former seventh-round draft pick by the Cincinnati Bengals, Bramlet also spent time with the Redskins in the 2006 preseason.

The Redskins do not have to fill Bramlet's roster spot because he was an NFL Europa exemption.
