Reed, 29, leaves the Redskins as one of the most accomplished tight ends in franchise history. A third-round draft pick in 2013, Reed made 329 receptions for 3,371 yards and 24 touchdowns during his time in Washington. Only Jerry Smith (1965-77) and Chris Cooley (2004-12) finished their careers with more.
Reed was at his best during the final four games of 2015, when he hauled in 29 of 31 targets for 378 yards and found the end zone five times. His dominance coincided with the Redskins playing some of their best football in recent memory, as four straight victories earned them the NFC East title and their first playoff appearance since 2012.
In 14 games that season, Reed set career highs in receptions (87), yards (952) and touchdowns (11).
Despite missing four contests with various injuries, Reed made his lone Pro Bowl in 2016 after amassing 686 yards and six touchdowns on 66 receptions.
Reed is one of the most-talented tight ends in the NFL, and he has performed like one when fully healthy. But for much of his career, he's struggled to stay on the field.
Reed has never played more than 14 games in a season and averaged 10.8 games played over his first six years. In 2019, Reed suffered his seventh documented concussion in Week 3 of the preseason that kept him sidelined for the entire campaign.
With Reed's release and Vernon Davis' recent retirement, the Redskins have three tight ends under contract through 2020: Jeremy Sprinkle, Hale Hentges and Caleb Wilson. The trio combined for 34 receptions, 344 yards and two touchdowns this past season.
